Field Stations
Field Facilities Centre
The University of Canterbury Field Facilities Centre is managed and under the direction of Facilities Management.
The Field Facilities Centre comprises the four Field Stations at Cass, Harihari, Kaikoura and Westport.
The Field Facilities Advisory Committee in the College of Science oversees the academic and research development at the Field Stations.
Mr Jack van Berkel is the Field Services Manager based at the Edward Percival Field Station, Kaikoura.
The Cass Field Station
The Cass area provides a wide range of environments - montane grasslands, scrub, riverbed, scree, beech forest, swamp, bog, lake, stream and alpine habitats can all be reached by day trips on foot.
The Edward Percival Field Station
The Edward Percival Field Station at Kaikoura has residential facilities for staff and students and laboratory facilities for maintaining live animals for study. The George Knox Research Laboratory provides accommodation for research students and visiting scientists.
The Hari Hari Field Station
The Hari Hari Field Station is situated in South Westland. It is used for staff and student research and field trips, providing easy access to native forests.
The Westport Field Station
The Westport Field Station at Westport comprises two units, the Maxwell Gage Field Centre and the Brian Mason Research Unit. Opened in 1995, the Field Station provides facilities for studies on the West Coast of the South Island. The Maxwell Gage Field Centre provides accommodation for both undergraduate and postgraduate students when they undertake field trips. The Brian Mason Research Unit operates as both a research facility for postgraduate students, staff and visiting researchers.
Field Laboratory - The Mt John University Observatory
The Mt John University Observatory at Tekapo, administered by the Physics
and Astronomy Department, is one of the premier observatories in the
Southern Hemisphere. The observatory has three telescopes used for research
by University staff and students and by astronomers from other institutions.
