New offices for Disability Resource Service (DRS) have been constructed in the east corner of level one of the James Hight building (previously occupied by the printery). DRS will be closed from Thursday 2 July to Monday 6 July inclusive, reopening on Tuesday 7 July in its new premises.
There may be delays in responding to emails and phone calls while the office is closed, however priority will be given to any urgent matters. Students needing to plan routes to the new offices should contact DRS (email: disabilities@canterbury.ac.nz) for details on how best to find their way there.
Disability Resource Service looks forward to seeing staff and students in its new premises which will continue to provide student study and rest areas.

A personal resilience and stress management programme developed
to provide people with the practical tools to cope more effectively,
and to not turn pressure into stress. The programme is aimed at
developing people's personal strengths, helping them to become
more resilient and to gain more control over their personal and
professional lives.
Delivering

This programme focuses upon the core skills of developing a sense
of empathy and appreciation for the needs of your customer or student
and using this to understand how you can best meet these needs.
A great programme for front line staff, or anyone who has interactions

The Government is considering changes to the student loan scheme, and would like to hear the thoughts of UC students.
Inland Revenue has opened an online forum so students can see the proposed changes, find out what others are saying, and send in their own feedback. Proposed changes include improvements to the way student loans are repaid and new online services so borrowers can manage their loan from anywhere at any time.

Engineering Without Borders NZ (EWBNZ) Canterbury Branch will be holding a fundraising BBQ in the Engineering Quad, Tuesday 7 July and Wednesday 8 July from 11-2pm.
Come out and buy a sausage in support of EWBNZ students’ efforts to raise funds towards their trip to Tonga later this year. EWBNZ is raising money to revisit a secondary school in Tonga to implement a renewable energy system. In collaboration with EcoCARE Pacific Trust, they aim to help solve the schools energy problems, and lend their expertise to help resolve other issues with computers, classroom fixtures, water supply and drainage systems. EWB NZ is an organisation of professional and student engineers who share a vision to confront global challenges of poverty, sustainable development and social inequity by undertaking projects that will directly improve the quality of life in communities within New Zealand and in the South Pacific region.

Emeritus Professor Peter Hempenstall will return to Christchurch this month to lecture on ideas that extend his contribution to Remaking the Tasman World, published earlier this year by Canterbury University Press.
"Getting inside the Tasman World" is his title for the annual Jim Gardner Lecture, which honours Canterbury’s doyen of local and regional history and this year will recapture a theme from much of Jim Gardner’s work: discovering and asserting the importance of local experience, history, and community traditions in the shaping of wider, national histories.
The Canterbury History Foundation is bringing Professor Hempenstall from the University of Newcastle, NSW, where he is Adjunct Professor in the School of Humanities and Social Science. He is also Emeritus Professor in History at UC and an ambassador-at-large for Trans-Tasman relations in the UC-based New Zealand Australia Research Centre. This is a free public event.
After the lecture the Foundation will present the Rhodes History Medal for long service to history, particularly for promoting interest in the wider community. This year’s medal is being awarded to Murray Thacker, founder and developer of the Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum.

The International Student Orientation is compulsory for all international students enrolling in a degree or diploma programme for the first time in 2009. New international students will not be permitted to complete their enrolment unless they have attended the compulsory orientation or signed up to attend one of the late arrivals orientation sessions. Bookings for Learn workshops are now available online for July.
With the implementation of Learn in semester two being so close, it is important to have your courses set up and to attend an Orientation Workshop. The workshop is a 90 minute hands on session that will get you started developing your Learn course ready for semester two. The skills developed will be essential in organising and managing the online aspect of your course.
The workshops on specific features focus on five widely used features in Learn. These features are: forums, assignments, quizzes, gradebook and groups. Each session is 60 minutes, focusing on setting up and using the specific feature. It is important to attend an orientation session before coming to a specific feature workshop.

Drop in sessions are also available in Law 422 on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 11am - 1pm, for the month of July. During the first week of Semester Two drop in sessions will be run each day from 9am - 4pm. Computers are available, so come along and work on your courses with assistance readily at hand.

Students – do you need a Workplace First Aid Certificate? St John has a number of two-day Workplace First Aid courses scheduled at the University of Canterbury during August and September for the special UC student price of $199 per person.

The St John Workplace First Aid course teaches the practical skills needed to manage a range of emergencies. This course is taught to an excellent assessment standard and ensures students feel confident about providing first aid when needed and that they are qualified to do so.

Bone Health Checks Ltd will be holding further bone density screening clinics at the Health Centre on Wednesday 15 July 2009 from 9am until 5.30pm (may continue on Thursday 16 July if demand exceeds one day).
The assessment takes 15 minutes and in that time gives you: a painless, safe ultrasound scan; your bone mineral density (BMD) measurement; a risk assessment for hip fracture (T & Z scores); expert advice on lowering your bone fracture risk.
