Information Days

10am–4pm, Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 9 July Engineering Foyer

Prospective students and their families will be visiting UC next week for our annual Information Days. Over these two days, subject presentations will be given by departments including what each subject is about, how it is taught, where it leads to, and any special requirements or features. Australia New Zealand Society of Indexers course

26 and 27 July Canterbury University

The tutor is Australian professional indexer Max McMaster and the two-day course covers the theory and practice of back-of-book indexing. Graduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies (GCAS)

Deadline for applications is 1 August 2008 and the course begins on Monday 17 November.

Gateway Antarctica is now accepting applications for the Graduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies (GCAS) - the 14 week course that includes field studies in Antarctica.

NZ Blood Service

The NZ Blood Service is going to be back at Canterbury University collecting blood on Wednesday 16 July and Wednesday 23 July from 10am until 3pm.

Interested in what's happening in the world?

The Australian Institute of International Affairs 75th Anniversary National Conference will be held in Melbourne on 7 August 2008.  It will be followed on 8 August with a Research Forum on Conflict and Security, in partnership with the Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies. Academic promotions 2008

Deadline: Closing date for applications Thursday 17 July 2008

Academic promotion documentation relevant to this year's promotion and progression round is now available at the following Human Resources web site: intranet.canterbury.ac.nz/hr/academic_promotions/index.shtml.

This material includes the timetable, criteria, application forms, notes for applicants and Heads of Department/School.

As outlined in the timetable, preparation of promotion applications and related documentation can now commence. 

Please note that two University-wide promotion seminars are planned and these are open to all interested staff. The seminars will be held on the following dates and times:

  • 11.30–12.30 pm, Monday 26 May — E10 Lecture Theatre, College of Engineering
  • 1-2pm, Friday, 30 May — Otakaro Room 146 L1, Dovedale.

UC Alumni Association Starry Nights Staff Ball

8pm-1am, Saturday, 26 July UCSA Complex, 90 Ilam Road

Dust off those dancing shoes and put on your coat and tails. All UC campus staff, ex staff, including staff of the UCSA, Sport Science and Recreation Services, Health Centre, residential halls, regional campuses, and partners/guests are invited to attend this special first-time event.

Highlights of the evening include special guest MC Aaron Gilmore from TVNZ's Dancing With The Stars, The Garden City Big Band, and an exhibition by three top junior dance couples. Floor walkers will be available for you to dance with so no need to bring a partner along.

Every ticket purchased will go into a draw to win an iPod Nano. A prize for best dressed and best dancing couple will be awarded on the night, along with other exciting spot prizes. Ticket price includes supper (9-11pm), with a cash bar operating in The Foundary bar. Special discount for earlybird and group registration. Book now, spaces are strictly limited.

New International Students Compulsory Orientation

9am-1pm, Wednesday 9 July — Room S1 (Science Lecture Theatres)

All new international students must attend Orientation hosted by International Student Support on Wednesday 9 July before they can enrol. The Orientation provides essential information as well as a chance to make new friends, share a free lunch and even take a short tour of the city. There are also two sessions for late arrivals on Wed. July 16 and Friday, July 18.

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori or Māori language week 2008

21– 27 July

Throughout the week there will be various activities and displays on campus to celebrate and promote Māori language to staff, students and the wider university community.

This year we are running an online Te Reo quiz open to all current students and staff at the University of Canterbury. Please check it out on www.canterbury.ac.nz/maoristudents/.

Fill out the quiz correctly and you will go into the draw to win one of five prize packs including a learn Te Reo Māori language resource pack (nā Nichol Gully rāua ko Fern Jenkins), t-shirt, coffee vouchers for the UCSA cafes where you can practice Te Reo over a coffee with friends and other goodies.

As part of this year's programmeRaimona Inia from Toa o Aotearoa, who recently screened on Māori TV, will be running a free demonstration and workshop on Māori weaponry on campus. The workshops will be on Thursday 24 July from 9am -12pm at Te Akatoki and from 1 - 4pm at the College of Education, Waimairi Field. Men and women are welcome to participate, just bring your own rakau/stick. Asia-Pacific Advanced Network Consortium Meeting (APAN26)

APAN26 is being held from 4-8 August 2008 at the Millennium Hotel in Queenstown, New Zealand, following on from the High Performance Research Symposium. The Asia Pacific Advanced Network Consortium meeting is Asia Pacific’s foremost event for showcasing advanced broadband networking applications and technologies for research and education.

APAN26 will explore how ICT developments and advanced networks are changing research and collaboration in the Asia-Pacific region - and contributing towards environmental, regional and operational sustainability. This event is a rare opportunity for New Zealand’s education and research sector to connect with power users of advanced network applications and services.

New Flexible Working Legislation

Planning for Retirement Workshops 2008

As in previous years, Human Resources is offering 'Planning for Retirement' workshops for staff.

These workshops are run by Allan Price, Director of Retirement Planning Seminars Ltd.

Four one-day workshops are still to be held in 2008 on 5 August, 26 September, 10 November and 27 November. The maximum number catered for in one workshop is 16 people (including partners, who are invited to attend with you). Preference will be given on a first-in, first-served basis upon receipt of the Registration Form by HR. There is no charge for individuals or partners. Excellent take-home resources will also be provided.

Christmas Leave Dates 2008/2009

The following shows the confirmed statutory and University holidays over the Christmas/New Year period 2008/2009 for those members of staff covered by the provisions of the Collective Agreements or corresponding Individual Agreements listed below.

Advice concerning these matters for staff covered by other agreements not listed will be issued in due course by the appropriate authority.

The University will close at the end of Tuesday 23 December 2008 and will re-open on Monday 5 January 2009. During this period (including statutory and University holidays) the Security Office (under the Main Library) will be open around the clock.

The Contact Centre for the 0800 Varsity number and the enrol@canterbury.ac.nz email service and website will remain open between Christmas and New Year for the hours 8am to 6pm. (The main University telephone exchange – 366 7001 – is closed during this period).

Please ensure that all your staff are notified of the vacation dates for 2008/2009. Enquiries regarding this leave entitlement should be referred in the first instance to the relevant Human Resources Advisor.

Leave for Staff covered by the following Collective Agreements or Individual Agreements as appropriate: Academic Staff & Senior Tutors, General Staff, Early Childhood Staff, Cleaners and Custodians, Maintenance Staff, Grounds Staff.
