Preparing online tests and surveys
(Flexible Learning Group, UCTL)
Respondus seminars:
The University has a licence for Respondus, a program which simplifies
preparation of online quizzes. The program (Windows only)
can process questions which you prepare in Word or a text editor,
then it connects directly to Learn and creates the quiz for you.
This makes preparing questions much faster and it will also
process many varieties of questions supplied on CD with textbooks.
Respondus will also download quizzes and questions from a course,
then allow you to upload these to another course, and it can
publish quizzes or surveys to multiple courses at a time.
Demonstrations of Respondus will be held in Commerce 009 on Thursday 11 February at 11am, and Tuesday 16 February at 2pm. The following topics will be covered:
- Installing Respondus on your computer
- Connecting to your Learn courses with Respondus
- Creating quiz questions in Microsoft Word
- Editing questions within Respondus
- Uploading questions and creating a quiz
- Downloading quizzes and questions from a course

Learn Workshops for 2010
Is your course's online presence ready for semester one?
Learn Orientation workshops are intended for staff who have not used Learn before. They are 90 minutes long and cover essential components of Learn which you are likely to use for adding resources and activities as well as for communicating with your students. You will receive a reference guide to take away with you after the workshop. We advise all staff to do an orientation workshop before coming to workshops on specific Learn features.
Learn Refresher workshops are intended for staff who have attended an orientation workshop last year and who need a little more practice with laying out sections and adding resources for students. These workshops are up to 90 minutes long and depending on those who attend, may also cover a few additional elements. Attendees are free to leave early if desired. The refresher workshops will not specifically cover detailed components such as Gradebook, Forums and Groups but may cover essential Assignment set-up procedures, depending on the requests of the participants who attend. Brief Learn reference material may be given to you to take away after the workshop.
Learn Feature workshops
Separate workshops on Gradebook, Quiz, Groups and Assignments (with
Turnitin) are also available. These sessions are up to 90 minutes
long which will include hands on activities and the opportunity
to ask specific questions about the feature in relation to your
course.
To book a workshop go to: http://uctl.canterbury.ac.nz/upcoming-moodle-workshops.
If you have not yet had an opportunity to complete our Learn Feedback survey, we invite you to do so by going to http://learn.canterbury.ac.nz/mod/feedback/view.php?id=42615 to complete it. This will give you the opportunity (anonymously) to tell us what kind of Learn help (workshops etc) you need in 2010. We can then plan Learn support around the demand.

Many people are becoming disenchanted with consumerism and increasingly concerned by global warming, over-fishing, pollution and the other problems that aggressive consumerism has caused. But what does all this mean for the way we live our lives, both as individuals and as communities? This meeting will provide an opportunity for people to share their thoughts and feelings on this subject.
Everyone welcome. For further information please contact Matt Morris at UC Sustainability, matthew.morris@canterbury.ac.nz. See the UC Simplicity Network flyer for information and dates for future meetings.
