Planning
The Committee met for part of the morning with the Directors/Heads of Service Departments, in a discussion on improving communication within the University.

Department of Geography – One Year On Report To Council
The One Year On Report to Council on the Review of the Department of Geography was discussed. The report is being referred to the March meeting of the Council.

Tertiary Education Advisory Commission
The Committee noted the launch the previous week of a discussion document by the Hon. Steve Maharey, on the Government’s planned Tertiary Education Advisory Commission.
Public comment on the Commission’s proposed terms of reference, structure, composition and related matters are sought by 6 March 2000. The web site references are the Ministry’s web site at

NZ Universities Domestic Tuition Fees
The updated table circulated by the NZVCC of domestic tuition fees payable at the various Universities was noted. Copies of this table, and the International Fees table, are available from the Secretaries to the Acting Manager, Academic Registry, (Phone extension 8976; Hilary Lloyd/Fiona Glynn).

Ash Wednesday
There will be mass and distribution of the ashes in The Chapel of Rochester and Rutherford Hall 12.10 pm Wednesday 8 March. All welcome.

First Aid Courses for Electrical Workers
Standard First Aid Courses and First Aid Refresher Courses are being offered in March 2000 to all University employees who carry out electrical work either prescribed or non-prescribed. These courses are for employees who carry out electrical work and are required by the Electricity Regulations to have this training for either registration purposes or to gain "Competent Person" status. Only these staff members are eligible to enrol. Full Standard First Aid courses and Refresher courses will be made available in the middle of the year which will be open to all staff and students.
Details of these courses with an enrolment form have been sent to Heads of Departments that employ electrical workers. For
details of these courses and an enrolment form, please contact the Secretary to the Health and Safety Manager on ext 8975.
Please note that the courses will run from 21 – 30 March 2000 and enrolments close on 10 March.

Audio Visual Bookings
Audio Visual Bookings have been so heavy this year we are having to close bookings daily at 2.30 pm so as to assure the following days bookings requests are met. CANTERPRISE

Canterprise is the commercial arm of the University of Canterbury. All consulting and research contracts that contain a commercial component are to be referred to Canterprise. This includes both new contracts and any new work or repeat business having commercial components that staff may wish to handle through existing grant accounts.

NZSTP Contracts The Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of the University has been successful in securing two contracts from the newly formed NZ Strategic Technology Programme which is a group of electricity lines companies. Short-term employment on these contracts for suitable electrical engineering students is being advertised by the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department.

Seminar on Bright Future Scholarships--Enterprise Scholarship
Sue Pauwels of the Foundation for Research Science and Technology will be presenting details of the Bright Future Scholarships Programme at a meeting in Lecture Room 101 of the Commerce Department from 12.00 pm to 1.00 pm on Friday 10 March. The presentation will concentrate on the Enterprise Scholarships programme, which supports Scholars in undertaking a programme of research and study which in most cases will be at postgraduate level. The scholarships are aimed at the top 25% of those undertaking postgraduate studies. The funding is provided by a contribution from an enterprise plus a matched Government contribution. In addition, Sue will outline the Enterprise Skills/Technologies Scholarships which are to be undertaken for training in technologies pertinent to enterprises. Enterprise Skills/Technologies Scholarships can be undertaken at a recognised organisation in New Zealand or overseas.
