Vice-Chancellor’s Office (previously the Vice-Chancellor Executive Committee) - Meeting held on Tuesday 23 January 2001

Discussion included:

VCO and Service Departments Structure
The finalised structures for the Vice-Chancellor’s Office and the Service Departments was noted. The organisational charts have been distributed to Heads of Departments. The chart is also on UCweb under University Structure Diagrams (
http://ucweb.canterbury.ac.nz/committee/intro.htm).

 

University Planning and Reporting Cycle
The formal University planning and reporting cycle was discussed. Scheduled steps involving the Statement of Objectives, the Annual Report and University Plan are being co-ordinated and agreed to ensure that the University meets the legislative and other reporting deadlines.

A Committee to co-ordinate the formal planning and reporting cycle has been established, consisting of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Chair), the Director of Business and Finance, the Registrar, the Quality Assurance Facilitator and the Planning Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor. The Committee will take responsibility for the planning cycle co-ordinating input and for ensuring the relevant documents meet the deadlines for Council’s consideration.

 

Audit Report
The Academic Audit Unit report on the University Audit carried out in the second half of 2000 is expected to be released early in February.


The 2001 Commencement Service

The 2001 Commencement Service organised by the University Chaplains is to be held at 4.00pm on Sunday 18 February in the Lower Common Room, UCSA Building. The Commencement Service is an annual worship service to start the beginning of the academic year. Staff and students are welcome to attend. 

Prayer Labyrinth

A Prayer Labyrinth is being organised by the University Chaplains, the Ilam Baptist Church, and the University's Christian Union as part of this year's Orientation Programme on campus. A Prayer Labyrinth, based on the Labyrinth in the Charteris Cathedral, is a labyrinth pattern that people walk through. As they do so the use the time for reflection, meditation and prayer. The Prayer Labyrinth will be located beside Okeover House on 19 and 21 February from 7.00-10.00pm. Staff and students are welcome to participate."


Powhiri

A Powhiri for Dr Helen Clothier, Powhiri Lecturer, Education Department, is to be held at Te Ara Pounamu, Rm 507, Education Department on Thursday 15 February 2001 at 6.30 pm.


New Zealand Japan Exchange Programme (NZJEP)

The New Zealand Japan Exchange Programme was established in 1974 by the New Zealand and Japanese Governments.  Its general aim is to promote a deeper understanding between the two countries through a programme of educational and cultural exchanges.   Activities are conducted annually which include visits between New Zealand and Japan by educators, artists and scholars.

The Association of Colleges of Education in New Zealand administers the NZJEP programme and invites applications from interested persons for funding towards appropriate proposals.  The closing dates for this year's round of applications are: 31 March 2001 and 31 October 2001.

All applications should include a clear outline of the nature of the project, and should indicate how applicants intend to share their experience and knowledge with others at the completion of their project.  A full curriculum vitae and detailed budget should also be included.

Audio visual Staff Training in Lecture Theatres 

Staff training on audiovisual equipment

On 13 - 14 February at 9.00am, 11.00am, and 2.00pm training will be given in the use of the equipment listed below, it will be held in theatre C3. If this is not convenient, theatre C3 is booked every Friday at 4.00pm for training, phone ext 6428 for bookings to any sessions.

Training will cover the use of:
a) General university wide equipment: Slide projectors, overhead projectors and portable data projectors.
b) Theatres C1 to C3, A1 to A3 and E1: Laptop connection, resident computers (not yet A1 to A3 - hopefully 2nd term), audio-cassette recording and playback, VCR, CD player, DVD player, radio microphones and the touch panel control system.


PhD Study Opportunity

Lakeshore Geomorphology & Plant Ecology, Department of Geography, University of Auckland

Applications are invited from potential Doctoral students to undertake a PhD research thesis involving an interdisciplinary study of processes of shoreline erosion, beach development, vegetation succession and disturbance on a young (54 years) lakeshore resulting from lowering a natural lake within a natural forest context. The applicant should have a background in lacustrine and/or coastal geomorphology, and preferably an interest and background in plant ecology. The study will be based at Lake Waikaremoana, located in the central North Island, New Zealand and will be supported with at least NZ$20,000 funding per year for field costs and scholarship support over three years.

IT Department desk — student help in the Loft

The Customer Services Division of the IT Department will be providing staff in the Loft at the beginning of the 2001 academic year to assist students with money transactions to their Canterbury Card, transfers to their computer account, password changes and general computer problems.

Canterbury Medical Research Foundation- Project Grants

The Canterbury Medical Research Foundation conducts this grant round with the objective of improving the quality of health care in Canterbury by fostering the strength and quality of local research.

The Foundation will endeavour, contingent on the subjects of the applications, to allocate the available fund of $120,000 into three streams of research, namely laboratory, clinical and community health.

Grants are available for individuals or small groups working on a clearly defined research project.

United States Institute of Peace- Unsolicited Grants

The Institute invites proposals for projects that will carry out research on the causes of war and international conflict, on ways it can be prevented, contained, or terminated; and on peace among states and peoples; and that will increase information and public understanding on international peace and conflict resolution. Priority is accorded to projects that have practical application and that may be useful for policymakers.

Department of Conservation funding 2001/02
The Stoat Technical Advisory Group requests Expressions of Interest in the following priority areas:

1. Research into management and control of stoats
2. Research into understanding the behaviour and ecology of stoats
3. Innovative research that has the potential to increase dramatically the effectiveness of stoat control

Canterprise Ltd is the commercial arm of the University of Canterbury. Canterprise handles commercial activities, including staff consulting, commercial research contracts, technology transfer and commercialisation of intellectual property. Canterprise will provide advice on the formulation of contracts, including costing, confidentiality arrangements, and intellectual property protection. Canterprise assists staff in obtaining funding from investors, industry and Technology New Zealand, including the GRIF, TBG, TechNet and TechLink schemes.
