University Transport Issues and
Options
The Facilities
Advisory Committee's Transport Working Group has been studying travel
to/from the University. An article on these issues appeared in
the Chronicle on 6 September and in Canta. The issues and
options are discussed in more detail in a short discussion paper,
which can be found at http://www.blds.canterbury.ac.nz/transport/menu.htm
The working group would like volunteers for focus groups to discuss
the issues and options in more detail. Refreshments and a book
voucher will be offered to those selected for an approximately two
hour discussion. Please contact Andreas Eng, Library,
a.eng@libr.canterbury.ac.nz,
ext 8720 by 17 September, providing your email address and phone
number. To help formulation of focus groups with a range of
viewpoints, please also advise whether you are staff (academic)/staff
(general)/student; full-time/part-time; male/female; distance you
live from University; current usual mode of travel and whether you
have dependents (eg. children) to deliver or collect elsewhere.
If you have any comments on these issues, please submit them in
writing to Andreas Eng by 1 October, or as soon as possible after
that date. Submissiions will be taken into account when forming
a transport strategy which will be developed for further comment in
2002.
Resident Tutors College
House
Vacancies exist for resident tutors at College House for the 2002
academic year.
College House is the oldest and most traditional hall of residence in
New Zealand. It moved to its present site in 1966 and is set in
park-like grounds with extensive lawn and trees. College House has
outstanding facilities, and there is a strong community spirit
assisted by the fact that a large number of students stay on for a
second year.
Six tutors share the day-to-day running of the House in conjunction
with the House Manager, Bursar and Principal. They share the
responsibility for the welfare of the 152 students, providing
academic assistance, pastoral care, and general oversight. Tutors
help with hall activities and social events. In return, tutors have
the use of a self-contained flat for the academic year, and meals
provided in the dining hall. Tutors who take group tutorials for
first year students receive additional payment.
Applications are invited from senior students who will be undertaking
honours or graduate studies at the University of Canterbury in
2002
Applications close on Thursday 20 September 2001. A full curriculum
vitae with a recent photograph and the names of two persons who are
willing and competent to act as confidential referees is to be
addressed to: The Principal, College House, 100 Waimairi Road,
Christchurch 8004.
Ad Hoc Room
Bookings
A web site link has been established at: http://www.blds.canterbury.ac.nz
(click on the "Room Bookings" link) for purposes of assisting
staff in booking University rooms on Ilam Campus for intended after
hours use. [NOTE: After hours refers to weekdays 6pm 8am,
weekends from 6pm Friday]. It is essential that Facilities
Management are advised regarding the proposed use of rooms. This
allows for service inputs regarding security and heating or cooling.
If a confirmed booking is not in place and staff are called out after
hours, a cost is incurred to the University and must be
recovered.
The remote request for a room booking is automatically forwarded to
Frances Register, Room Bookings Co-Ordinator. When the room status is
determined, a confirmation or decline notice will be sent, the
booking entered on Syllabus+ and notification lodged to Security and
Works & Services. Bookings may also continue to be made via
telephone ext 6648, Fax 6484, f.register@regy.canterbury.ac.nz.
Publicity opportunity on
radio
Every Wednesday night at 7.10pm the University of Canterbury has a 10
minute interview on Canterbury on Air to promote the courses and
subjects we offer, or to talk about events on or related to campus
that would be of interest to the general public. Brigitte Murray,
Marketing Manager is coordinating weekly speakers, and would like
interested departments to contact her with volunteers, ideas and
suggestions. Please phone ext 6685, marketing@regy.canterbury.ac.nz.

like help with your application, contact us with plenty of time
before the application deadline. Applications and guidelines can be

Research Office website.
Centres of Research Excellence Fund (CoRE Fund)
The University's Research Committee, in association with the Research
Office, will be administering applications submitted to the Centres
of Research Excellence Fund (CoRE Fund). In particular, the Committee
has decided that the number of abstracts submitted to the Fund will
be rationalised and limited. This decision is based on the fact that
only 3 to 6 Centres will be funded nationally and, hence, the
University must only put forth its strongest candidates.
Academic staff who are interested in the CoRE Fund should familiarise
themselves with the draft selection criteria found in the discussion
document that can be downloaded from http://www.rsnz.govt.nz/funding/core/discuss.php
Copies of the discussion document are also available from your HoD,
as all academic HoDs were sent a copy on 10 August.
A one-page Expression of Interest that details how your proposed
Centre will fit the selection criteria is due in the Research
Office by 3:00 pm on Tuesday, 18th September. Late submissions
will be excluded from the assessment process.
The Research Committee will review the Expressions of Interest to
select the candidates that will be eligible to submit an abstract to
the Fund. The Research Office will be assisting staff in the
development of abstracts and full proposals. We are also available to
help you with your expressions of interest and will keep interested
groups updated on any amendments to the selection criteria.
Please contact the Research Office for more information. It is
also available on the Foundation website http://www.frst.govt.nz/public/pgsf/pgsf2.htm
The Foundation will also be calling for research proposals that
contribute to improved culture or governance outcomes for Maori.
SCHOLARSHIPS
The Scholarships Office is

a wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate awards.
