Vice-Chancellor's Office meeting held on Tuesday 4 June 2002

Discussion included:

Health Sciences
Professor Andrew Hornblow, Health Sciences Planning Consultant, was in attendance at the meeting to speak to the draft Discussion Document he had produced "Health Sciences in Canterbury". The Discussion Document was endorsed for circulation internally and externally. Input and comment would be sought by the end of July.
The document has been circulated to Heads of Departments. An email has been sent to all staff, advising of the invitation for feedback. The intranet reference for access to the document is

Wireless Technologies
Associate Professor Mike Dewe, IT Director, was present during a discussion of the development of future wireless technologies. The potential role of wireless LANs in education, and complementing wired LANs, was noted. Some of the drawbacks and issues were discussed.
Wireless LANs were seen as sensible, desirable and inevitable, but there was no clear indication yet of when it would be appropriate to move to implement initial pilots within the University.

WebCT Information Morning

For staff who have not yet had experience with the WebCT On-line Learning system, or would like to know more, the I.T. Department and ERAU are hosting an information morning on Tuesday June 25th, in the Coppertop, 2nd floor of the Commerce building. The programme will start at 9 and finish after 12, with a mixture of demonstrations and hands-on sessions.

Recruitment Unit staffing

Diane Lynes, currently Liaison Officer at the Christchurch College of Education, has been appointed Liaison Officer within the University's new Recruitment Unit, an amalgamation of the schools liaison and marketing functions within the portfolio of Business and Finance Director Tom Gregg.  She takes up the appointment on Thursday 11 July and will be in Room 405 of the Registry, on ext 6993.

Brigitte Murray, the University’s Marketing Manager, will be the Recruitment Unit Coordinator for the rest of 2002, filling the role of HOD.  She is currently located in Registry Room 518 on ext 6685.  Facilities Management is investigating co-location options for the Recruitment Unit.

Standard Courses - (Limit – 20 people) - Cost: $53
The Standard Course is designed for those who need comprehensive instruction in Basic Life Support and Emergency Care and aims to produce a competent person (first responder), who is able to cope in most emergency situations.  A Certificate, nationally recognised by the Department of Labour, is awarded to people who successfully complete the course.

Staff Preventive Health Care Service

The UC “Staff Preventive Health Care Service” will continue until further notice. The service will operate on Wednesdays, 8.30am to 12.30pm (usually initial appointments), Thursdays, 8.30 am to 12.30 pm (usually follow-up appointments).

This free and confidential service, available at the University Health Centre, is being provided by the Occupational Health and Practice Nurse, Ms Lyn Hansen. The health checks offered include:
Blood pressure monitoring, blood glucose testing, urine testing (for kidney disease, high blood pressure and diabetes), basic eye testing, weight management, blood cholesterol / lipid testing, smoking cessation advice.

Flu Vaccines

The Health Centre is again offering flu vaccines for staff.  Please make an appointment ext 6402.

We are charging the very low price of $12.  It will be free for those of you over 65 and for those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes or asthma.  


ERAU

ERAU Workshop and Seminar Programme

Canterbury in Context (Induction) - Tuesday June 18, 9am - midday, ERAU seminar room:
An induction session designed to help those new to Canterbury understand its academic environment. Topics covered include academic decision-making, the obligations and responsibilities of university teachers, students, equity issues and the role of ERAU.

Lecturing (core teaching workshop) - Weds June 19, Thur June 20 and Fri June 21, 9am to midday each day, ERAU seminar room:
Considers key principles in the design and presentation of lectures. In the practice and feedback sections of the workshop, participants present a short "lecture" to a small group of peers and then to a larger group. All participants will be involved in giving and receiving constructive feedback. Course co-ordinators Rod McKay and Jane Robertson.


The Careers Advisory Service

Our Graduate Recruitment Programme enables employers to recruit final year students for positions that will commence in 2003. Some employers also offer summer internships or vacation work experience for penultimate year students. Ad Hoc Room Bookings

A web site link has been established at: www.blds.canterbury.ac.nz (click on the "Room Bookings" link) for purposes of assisting staff in booking University rooms on Ilam Campus for intended after hours use. [NOTE: After hours refers to weekdays 6pm – 8am, weekends from 6pm Friday]. It is essential that Facilities Management are advised regarding the proposed use of rooms. This allows for service inputs regarding security and heating or cooling. If a confirmed booking is not in place and staff are called out after hours, a cost is incurred to the University and must be recovered.

The remote request for a room booking is automatically forwarded to Frances Register, Room Bookings Co-Ordinator. When the room status is determined, a confirmation or decline notice will be sent, the booking entered on Syllabus+ and notification lodged to Security and Works & Services. Bookings may also continue to be made via telephone ext 6648, Fax 6484, f.register@regy.canterbury.ac.nz.


Audio visual equipment bookings for 2002

Logie Collection Tours

The Classics Department is pleased to offer tours of the Mediterranean antiquities in the James Logie Memorial Collection to staff, students and members of the public.  Enquiries to Roslynne Bell on ext 8571 or r.bell@clas.canterbury.ac.nz.  Next tour 5 August 2002, 12.00pm - 1.00pm. Uni-Care International Travel Insurance

The AUS recommends that its members use Uni-Care Insurance for sabbatical, other study and very long-term travel overseas.  Uni-Care allows 15% off standard rates to all university staff members, full time tertiary students and their families and, uniquely, can maintain cover for greatly extended periods overseas.  The policy includes medical and loss of deposits cover in New Zealand for long term travellers who return home temporarily.  Please note that Canterbury University has an in-house, business travel insurance policy which applies to staff travelling on behalf of the University.

RESEARCH OFFICE

The Research Office offers assistance to researchers wishing to apply for grants.  If you would like help with your application, contact us with plenty of time before the application deadline.  In most cases applications and guidelines can be downloaded electronically from our website www.research.canterbury.ac.nz.  If they are not available please email or phone us.

Please remember that all applications to funding sources for grants and research fellowships must be directed through the Research Office.  This is regardless of whether or not the funding source has been advertised by the Research Office or another source, such as an organisation newsletter.

University of Canterbury 2002 Internal Grants Round

The Research Committee has confirmed that available funding for the internal grants round (Research Grants, Equipment Grants and Postdoctoral Fellowships) is the same as that awarded in 2001.

Research: $800,000, Equipment: $1,200,000, Postdoctoral Fellowships: 12 Fellowships.

The dates for the 2002 round are:
29 July 2002.  Deadline for obtaining an application number and last day for receiving advice, 31 July 2002.  All applications and Departmental Ranking Forms must be in the Research Office by 12noon.  (Please note that Departmental deadlines will be earlier than this - consult your HoD).  These deadlines will be strictly enforced.

25/26 September 2002 Research Committee to consider applications.  Mid October 2002 results announced by internal mail (please do not phone for results).  If successful, you will be informed of the level of funding approved and your grant account number.  An acceptance form and a budget spreadsheet will be enclosed for completion and return.  October 25 2002 you will be required to return your forms to the Research Office for receipt by 12noon.  If you are going to be absent from campus at this time, it is your responsibility to make arrangements for acceptance.  January 1 2003, funds available for use.

CANTERPRISE Ltd

Canterprise Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary and the commercial arm of the University of Canterbury. The purpose of Canterprise is to work in partnership with industry for the benefit of the University and its staff. This incorporates staff consulting, research services, technology transfer, commercialisation of intellectual property, innovation and new business opportunities. Canterprise will assist staff with the preparation of contracts including costings, confidentiality arrangements and intellectual property protection and will also assist in obtaining funding from investors, industry and Technology New Zealand including the Technology For Industry Fellowship (TIF), Technology For Business Growth (TBG), TechNet and TechLink programmes.

Many of the national and regional patent offices throughout the world have established their own web-sites allowing searching of their collections of patent documents and these include:

World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO)

The collections of IP Australia, IPONZ and USPTO are restricted to patent applications in their respective jurisdictions only while the WIPO database provides access to copies of international Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications.  For further assistance please do not hesitate to contact Canterprise.
