Senior Management Team
From a meeting of the Senior Management
Team held on Tuesday 4 November 2003
Discussion included:
Teaching Space Audit
The review of teaching space carried out by the Facilities Advisory Committee,
and Facilities Management, was discussed. The Chair of the Facilities
Advisory Committee, Dr Bob Hall, and the Facilities Management Director,
Peter Molony, were present.
The outcomes from the audit of teaching space were noted. The possibility
of a space charging regime would be the subject of further discussion.
The report would be released to Departments and Schools shortly. The matter
would also be placed on the agenda for a future JEXHODs meeting.
Policies and Procedures
The proposal for a Policies and Procedures Development and Review Policy
was discussed. The Director of the Planning and Institutional Research
Unit, Dr Bob Hall, and the Academic Services Director, Bill Matthew, were
present.
The distinction between:
· Legislation - and legislative compliance
· Policies - where University compliance was required, and
· Procedures/guidelines - where expectations were clearly placed
on the University community
was noted.
The implementation of the Development and Review Policy would result in
a Canterbury Policies and Procedures “Bank” being included
on the UC website.
The two stage process for the development of the project was noted:
1. the comprehensive list of policies is compiled, with a standard introduction,
and
2. the systematic review of the documents is undertaken, and a standard
template is applied to each one.
The Director of the Planning and Institutional Research Unit, the Registrar
and Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic) would form the project team to manage
the continuation of the project.
Academic Board
The forthcoming review of the Academic Board was discussed.
A paper would be developed for the next meeting of the Board, suggesting
the setting up of a working group chaired by the Deputy Vice Chancellor
to review and report on the composition of a new Academic Board, on the
basis of the review foreshadowed by the Implementation Plan.
The review might make recommendations on:
· the optimum size of the Academic Board
· the way in which its members are appointed/elected
· any other matters which would contribute to the more effective
operation of the Board
Participation in Tertiary Education 2003
The publication of the report by the Ministry of Education on Participation
Trends in New Zealand Tertiary Education, including information up to
2002, was noted. Enquiries to Dr Bob Hall, email: bob.hall@canterbury.ac.nz

Shane Cotton paintings
exhibition closes 23rd November
It is appropriate that SOFA Gallery acknowledges graduate
students from its parent institution, the School of Fine Arts at the University
of Canterbury.
Since graduating, Shane Cotton has established himself as one of New Zealand's
foremost painters, an artist who has contributed greatly to the cultural
context and drawn attention to a number of challenging socio-political
issues confronting New Zealanders today.
This exhibition follows the recent comprehensive Shane Cotton/
Survey 1993-2003 presented by the City Gallery, Wellington. It focuses
on a small body of work ranging from art school days to the present and
reveals how the artist slowly began to absorb and re-present important
aspects of his Maori heritage but through paintings firmly rooted within
contemporary western practice.
SOFA Gallery is proudly supported by Wyatt and Wilson Print, Resene Paints,
and Torlesse Wines.
Gallery hours 11-5 Monday to Friday 12- 4 Saturdays and
Sundays.

Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Tertiary
Teaching
If you are interested in finding out more about these
qualifications (perhaps with a view to enrolling in 2004), please contact
Jane Robertson, ext 6851, jane.robertson@canterbury.ac.nz.
New initiative in on-line professional development
If you are a new or experienced lecturer or tutor interested
in interacting with other tertiary teachers in an on-line environment
and/or currently engaged in any form of on-line teaching
then you will be interested in this new initiative.
Ultralab South, in conjunction with the Canterbury Tertiary
Alliance (CTA) has received Ministry of Education funding to conduct a
pilot of a web-supported professional development programme in 2004, designed
specifically for New Zealand tertiary education teachers. The programme
is called Teachers for Teachers for Tertiary (T4T4T) and aims to establish
a supportive professional learning community of tertiary teachers and
to contribute to our knowledge of what makes for effective “E-learning”
in tertiary education
There are two possible levels of involvement in the project
- as a mentor/researcher or as a participant.
Mentor/researchers will be sought from academic staff interested
in working with and supporting an on-line discussion community within
the university. University of Canterbury mentors will work with mentors
from other local tertiary institutions to plan and facilitate cross institution
on-line engagement. We will be looking for 2 – 3 mentor/researchers
at Canterbury. Funding is available to ‘buy-out’ part of the
mentor/researchers’ workload.
Participants will be recruited from amongst new and experienced
lecturing and tutoring staff and from staff currently engaged in various
forms of on-line teaching. Relatively newly appointed lecturers and tutors
are strongly encouraged to be involved. Participants do not require any
previous on-line teaching experience. The programme will provide an opportunity
to interact with other interested colleagues in an on-line community,
to discuss teaching approaches/strategies and to experience online learning
(a useful prerequisite to facilitating on-line teaching activities). We
will be seeking approximately 25 participants. Some funding will be available
in recognition of people’s involvement.
At this stage we are seeking ‘expressions of interest’
for the mentor/researcher positions and from those who wish to participate
in the pilot. Final selection of the mentor/researchers will be made by
a cross-institutional Liaison Panel. Mentor/researchers will then recruit/select
participants with a view to ensuring a balance of new and experienced
lecturers and tutors.
If you are interested in being involved in this initiative
at either level, please contact Jane Robertson (jane.robertson@canterbury.ac.
nz ext. 6851) for further information.
