SMT news

From a meeting of the Senior Management Team held on Tuesday 9 March 2004

Discussion included:

Technician Review
The SMT considered the outcome of a possible review of technical services.
The Committee agreed:

1. The College PVCs and College Managers should be requested to review technical services within their Colleges, and between Colleges, to consider how any duplication of technical services can be addressed.

That review would also take into account the technical skills within FM, and look at rationalisation and skills set requirements.

2. Changes in UC will now lead to PVCs needing to be well aware of the requirements to scrutinise all staffing and all spending, and to set priorities for spending such that the Colleges are within the contribution margins required and being developed by the Budget Advisory Committee for recommendation to the Chief Operating Officer.

3. A separate formal Review of Technical Staffing is not required at this stage.

PBRF Results Process
The communication process on the PBRF results, both to individual members of staff on 18 March (date since altered, see notice) and the overall report which would be released on 23 March, was discussed.

Canterprise
John Walley and Sir Angus Tait, Canterprise Board members, were in attendance to make a presentation on Canterprise.

There was a wide ranging discussion.

The future potential of Canterprise, and the importance of participation by staff members from all Colleges and the School of Law, was noted.

Independent Researchers on Campus
The proposed policy for individual researchers on campus as outlined in the recommendations from the Research Committee, was endorsed.

Vice Chancellor’s Forum
The Vice Chancellor will be holding the first all staff forum for the year at 3.30pm in C1 on Wednesday 7 April. All members of the University will be welcome to attend.

The forum will be the opportunity to address a number of issues, concerning the current “state of the University”. Matters to be discussed will include the 2003 Annual Report and Financial Statements, the outcomes of the PBRF exercise and 2004 University enrolments.

PBRF Public Report

The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) has announced that the release of the Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) Public Report has been delayed due to court action by the University of Auckland and Victoria University of Wellington. The release of staff Quality Categories has also been delayed. These will not be released to staff on 18 March as was previously stated. TEC expects to release these after the outcome of the court case is known next week.

"It Happens at Home" - an exhibition of stories highlighting family violence.

It Happens at Home is an exhibition highlighting issues of family violence. Created by Halina Ogonowska-Coates in the medium of visual art, the work highlights a critical social issue - domestic violence. Made up of five standing panels (doors), it features edited interviews and photographs of two men and two women who have experienced family violence.

The work is compelling, shocking and courageous - for all of those involved; its contributors, its creator and its audiences.

The exhibition can be viewed at the Department of Social Work, Arts Road until the end of March.
