Prestigious Royal Society honours for UC staff
First public lecture by UC's inaugural Distinguished Professor
Top
There was no SMT meeting on Tuesday 9 November 2004.
There will be a University Farewell to Professor Bob Kirk and Dr Judy Kirk on Thursday 9 December at 4.30 p.m. in Lecture Theatre C1 to be followed by a social occasion in the Central Lecture Theatre Block foyer.
Contributions towards a gift may be made directly to Andrea Schoorl (extension 6241), Level 6, Registry.
The inaugural “Outside the Square” lecture is to be given by Sir Tipene O’Regan. The title of the lecture is “The Weka, the Snare and Discourse in the New Zealand Village”, and it will be a consideration of New Zealand’s contemporary race relations discourse within the context of its historical roots and the new demographic realities.
The lecture series is a joint initiative of the University of Canterbury and the Christchurch City Council as part of a wider protocol of cooperation signed by both parties last year.
Sir Tipene, a Ngai Tahu kaumatua who has recently been appointed as Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Maori) at the University, led the tribe’s Waitangi Tribunal land and sea claims, and played a pivotal role in the Treaty of Waitangi fisheries settlements of 1989 and 1992.
The lecture will be delivered on Thursday 2 December 2004 at 7.30pm in the James Hay Theatre, Christchurch Town Hall.
Tickets are required for entry so to reserve your seats please either
visit www.conference.canterbury.ac.nz
or
phone 364 2915 or
e-mail: publiclecture@canterbury.ac.nz.

The UC Web Project ran a very successful "Writing for the Web" seminar and workshops in November. There is an opportunity to repeat the seminar and workshops from 14-16 December. As these dates are very close to Christmas, we would like to have expressions of interest before final arrangements are made.
The workshop concentrates on editing and writing body copy to make information on web pages instantly skim-readable, concise and crystal clear. You don't need any special technical knowledge or HTML skills. This workshop highlights the differences between writing for print and writing for an online audience.
If you are interested in attending a day workshop please email sue.woodgate@canterbury.ac.nz by Monday 22 November. Numbers on the course will be limited and if more wish to go than the there are places, priority will be given to those working most closely on the Web.

Yes, it’s that time again! Time to get your walking boots/running shoes on and get your entries in for this popular event.
For the uninitiated the Fun Run and Walk is not a race. You don’t even have to break into a run! A five person team specifies the combined time it will take to complete the course and the winner is the team which finishes the course closest to their nominated time. Teams can complete the course as a group, or include runners, joggers and walkers combining their times. Watches are not allowed.
The course itself is not daunting. It can be completed within 40 minutes at a moderate walking pace and in less than 15 minutes for those who are keen runners. Some practice will help in establishing the team time.
The event is designed as a fun event and everybody is encouraged to have a go. You can send an individual entry in if you wish and we will place you in a team. Entries close on Friday 3rd December. Maps and entry forms have been sent to all departments. However, if you missed out there are extra copies available from Reception at the Recreation Centre. Any enquiries can be directed to Craig Motley, ext 8204 or on craig.motley@canterbury.ac.nz.

IT is offering broadband in the next month or so to University of Canterbury
Staff.
Broadband is generally accepted to mean a connection of 512kbit/s or
above. Dialup is only 56kbit/s. You can use your telephone and connect
to the internet at the same time.
For details of the different plans visit:
http://www.it.canterbury.ac.nz/department/UoC_broadband.ppt
You have to buy the modem. However, Xtra has a deal where if you sign
up before the December 5, you get the modem for free.
If you say that you want to change ISP's to the University's ISP, SNAP,
after your initial 6 month period concludes then you are "unlikely"
to be charged a "churn fee".
