Seminar for researchers: Using the University of Canterbury Supercomputer (UCSC)

Wed 14th February, Lecture Theatre A3, 11am-12noon and repeated at 4-5pm. www.ucsc.canterbury.ac.nz/news.shtml

We are pleased to announce the first of what we hope will be a series of seminars for researchers interested in learning about the University of Canterbury's new Supercomputer.

In the middle of last year UC installed the most powerful research supercomputer in New Zealand. In six months we completed several exemplar applications that provided an opportunity to examine the benefits of advanced computing.

The results have been very pleasing and it is always a good sign when a range of academics at varying stages of their research careers have great things to say about the facility.

We would like to share the results of this academic led initiative with research colleagues during a seminar that will tell you:

  • How you can easily access yourself of High Performance Computing to assist with your research
  • Successful experiences of academics, all new to High Performance Computing and how we provide support and help.

We will also briefly talk about growing international trends associated with High Performance Research computing and how the new Supercomputer and our relationship with IBM Corporation is helping to build linkages with elite international research institutions.

Come to the seminar and hear an academic view on how this researcher led, academic driven facility can help you quickly achieve more with your research projects.

Science Prestige public lecture: The Music of the Primes

Thursday 15 February, 5.30pm, C2 lecture theatre.

Presented by world renowned mathematics researcher and communicator, Professor Marcus du Sautoy from Oxford University, UK.

Prime numbers are the hydrogen and oxygen of the world of numbers. Despite their fundamental importance to mathematics, they represent one of the most tantalising enigmas in the pursuit of human knowledge. Mathematics is the science of patterns. Yet the most fundamental numbers in the subject seem to have no patterns to them at all. They seem scattered randomly through the universe of numbers. But by looking at these numbers in a new way, mathematicians have discovered what they believe is the secret to the way Nature chose the primes.

Does your department want to join UC's entry in the NZ Bikewise Business Battle?

Monday 19 February to Sunday 4 March

Are you keen to take part in a fun challenge that saves you money, helps our environment, and improves your health? The NZ Bikewise Business Battle is a fun competition that encourages more people to give cycling a go. All it takes is encouraging staff in your department to hop on a bike and go for a short (or long) ride. People can ride wherever and whenever they feel comfortable for a minimum of 2km (or 10 mins), and you will go in the draw to win some great prizes simply by taking part!

UC is competing against other similar sized organisations to see who can get the highest percentage of staff cycling over a two week period. Within UC, individual departments can sign up and compete with other UC departments and with similar sized departments from elsewhere. All the details, including how it works, and how to join individually and as part of a UC department, are available at www.bikewise.co.nz.

If you need help organising your department's winning entry, contact Sustainability Advocate Dr Kate Hewson (kate.hewson@canterbury.ac.nz, extn 6017). For more information on upcoming cycling events, facilities and services on campus, visit www.sustain.canterbury.ac.nz/transport/cycling.

Japan - Gardens and Landscapes
Commencing in mid May, this tour takes you on an expedition of Japanese gardens, landscapes, culture and history. Lead by Professor Bill Willmott and garden writer Diana Madgin.

This 15-day tour examines this vastly modern country in contrast with traditional and ancient sites. Travel through scenic mountains, paddy fields and forests, view a village of heritage rural houses and visit a range of Japanese gardens from minimalist Zen to Edo opulence. Highlights include Buddhist and Shinto shrines, ancient gardens and an excursion to Peace Park.

Medieval England and Wales
Departing in mid-June this tour takes you on an historic journey focusing not only the medieval era but also gives the opportunity to explore back to the Iron Age, Industrial Age and Roman existence.

Walk through ancient Roman Amphitheatre in Chester; visit Stokesay Castle, a beautifully preserved 13th century manor house, as well as exploring Ludlow Castle and surrounding charming medieval villages. To enhance the experience enrolled participants will be invited to attend complimentary pre-tour lectures, led by University of Canterbury's Frieda Looser, relating specifically to the proceeding journey.

Bohemian Journey
Our Bohemian Journey is scheduled to depart in late July. This tour encompasses traditional folk musical, Bohemian lifestyles and other themes in beautiful historic villages of Eastern Europe. The tour commences in Prague, and then travels through the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland visiting each regions cultural and architectural gems, including castles, museums and spectacular countryside. There are chances to meet locals and many of the musicians and other friends of leader Dr Roger Buckton.

There is also the option to continue on your Bohemian Journey to Aldeburgh, Britain to visit archaeological and historical sites and continue your musical encounter with the annual Benjamin Britten Festival and other concerts.

Places are very limited. Brochures for the above journeys are now available. Please contact Maria Gumina on (03) 364 2470, International Programmes Department, at the University of Canterbury.
