The Canterbury Astronomical Society is hosting a public viewing night at its observatory at West Melton. We'll celebrate the planet Saturn which is well placed for viewing at present. Early visitors will receive a NASA sticker or an image of a solar system object. See our website, www.cas.org.nz if you are unsure about the weather and to see a location map for the observatory. The 20th January 2007 marked 50 years since the establishment of Scott Base in Antarctica. This base is something that New Zealanders are very proud of as it is a key part of New Zealand's international involvement and a significant contributor to Antarctic scientific research.
The Library is pleased to host an exhibition that marks this significant event. A photographic essay that documents the establishment of Scott Base is currently on display in the Central Library, Level 2 Lounge until 9 April.

The Parents’ Committee of the Early Childhood Learning Centre is planning a get-together for parents of children both currently and formerly enrolled at the ECLC. They are planning a daytime event with fun activities for both parents and children, and invite expressions of interest from parents along with feedback on what activities you would like to participate in. Christchurch Civil Defence will be undertaking a walk from QE2 Park to Porritt Park at the same time that thousands of runners are running to QE2 Park. The CDEM group will be walking in the opposite direction carrying Civil Defence banners and will be dressed up in yellow T-shirts and Caps to help promote the "Be Prepared" message.
The group will be meeting at the City Council tent in Ascot Park on Ascot Ave at 9am sharp and staff will provide T-Shirts and caps and provide instructions. The walk starts at 9.30am and they expect to be at Porritt Park by 10.10am then after 15 mins the group will walk back with some children and Red Cross members. On return to QEII a BBQ will be in operation and the event should be finished by mid day

The first ever academic New Zealand Women in Leadership Programme in the Tertiary Education Sector is being launched this year and UC is seeking applications from academic women who wish to participate. The programme is being arranged with the support of The New Zealand Vice-Chancellors Committee.
The programme is a five-day residential interactive programme which is designed to recognise and enhance women’s leadership capacities and potential, and increase their status and influence within New Zealand universities. Leading organists from Austria and Germany, as well as organ curator and UC Associate Professor Martin Setchell, will present a series of concerts at the Christchurch Town Hall this year to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the installation of the Rieger organ.
The first concert in the series will be presented at 3pm on Sunday 18 March by Austrian organist Florian Pagitsch. His programme will include music by Gigout, Durufle, Dupre and Mulet, as well as Pagitsch's transcription of Weber's Overture of Der Freischutz and an improvisation.

Neuroscientist Professor Steven Rose, Emeritus Professor of Biology from the Open University in Britain, and sociologist Professor Hilary Rose, Emerita Professor at the University of Bradford, will challenge some of the current orthodoxies in evolutionary biology and show the inextricable links between the moral and the political, and the personal and scientific during this free lecture.
Professor Steven Rose is in New Zealand as a guest of the Navigator Network, an initiative of the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology. Professor Hilary Rose holds a Canterbury Visiting Fellowship at the University of Canterbury.

The Royal Society of NZ, jointly with the National Science Council of Taiwan, is committed to managing three joint workshops to be held in Taiwan during the 1 July 2007 to 30 June 2008 year. The themes of the workshops are: 1. Operation of an Agricultural Produce Supply Chain including Biotechnology; 2. Commercialisation and Technology Transfer of Academic Research Achievements; and 3. Geosciences. We are now seeking appropriate people to participate in these workshops. If you are interested and have an indepth knowledge on any of these themes and would like to participate then please register your name with Eddie Davis at eddie.davis@rsnz.org before 22 March 2007 indicating which workshop you are interested in.
We are just at the proposal stage and wanted to get a feel of who was "out there" that was interested and their area of expertise. More will be known in a month or two or a little later. A panel will decide who gets selected and all travel and accommodation costs etc will be covered by the Royal Society and others.
