Library Hours

At this time of year the Library adjusts its hours of opening for a short period of time to provide students with more opportunities to use our facilities for exam preparation.

Staff and Students need to note the following changes:

Friday 19 October (last day of lectures) Central Library will close at 5pm.

Labour Day (Monday 22 October). All libraries open and close at normal times except:

  • Education Library will be open from 9am to 9pm.
  • Engineering & Physical Sciences Libraries will be open until 11pm
  • Macmillan Brown Library will be closing at 5pm.

Tuesday 23 October-Wednesday 14 November End-of-year Exams

  • Extended hours of opening for the Engineering, Law and Physical Sciences libraries.These libraries will be open from Monday-Thursday until 11pm and on Fridays will remain open until 9pm.


New intake of Bridging Programmes Students

Bridging Programmes has a new semester beginning on 23 October, with an orientation week on 15 October. This covers Foundation Studies, Certificate in University Preparation, Certificate in English for Tertiary Studies, and Academic English programmes. Students requiring assistance should be directed to the administration office on Level 3, Rutherford Building.

2007 Annual Biology Colloquium for PhD Students

9am-5pm, Friday 26th October, in lecture theatres A4-A6.

A BBQ will follow at 5pm. The theme for this symposium is '‘Biotechnology, Biodiversity and Biosecurity’ and is an opportunity for students to showcase their research that could have a real and significant impact on New Zealand's natural environment.
This is a whole day event with parallel sessions running in two lecture theatres. Talks from each of the three areas of interest will be mixed in each session so it really provides an opportunity to see the wide spectrum of research that is going on in the biology department.

CAGCY (Canterbury Association for Gifted Children and Youth) 30th birthday celebration

Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 October — Hagley Open Stage Theatre, 510 Hagley Ave, Christchurch.

Saturday 27 October

  • 10am — researcher Danny Knudson and author of "Gifted education in New Zealand primary schools 1878-2005" will speak on the "History of Gifted Education in NZ, and Case studies 40 years on".
  • 12.30pm — educator and researcher Louise Tapper will speak about "Perceptions of underachievement in gifted and talented students".
    Cost $10 per seminar. 

Sunday 28th October — 2pm and 6pm
CAGCY children give gala performances of wearable art, music, drama, dance and comedy. There will be performances of excerpts from classic favourites "Alice in Wonderland" and "Midsummer’s Night Dream" plus new musical, dance and theatrical works written by the children themselves.

CAGCY adult education seminar

7.30-9pm,Thursday 25 October — Upper Riccarton Library Learning Centre

The CAGCY  is also organising a seminar by Dr Peter Cammock  who will speak on the importance of “Parenting for Spiritual Intelligence”. It will explore that although literacy and numeracy skills are important, it is easy to forget that there is a whole other side to life as well. Spiritual intelligence leads children and adults on a path of self-knowledge and understanding, and helps develop a strong and well-rounded personality.

General Staff Development Awards

Applications for the December Awards open on Thursday 18 October 2007 and close at 5pm, Thursday 15 November 2007.

The Vice-Chancellor’s General Staff Development Awards of up to $5000 are available twice a year for continuing General Staff members (including continuing part-time staff.) The awards are to recognise and assist exceptional professional development initiatives by general staff. The sum may be allocated in total to one individual or team, or in parts to a number of applicants.

Uganda trip

Thank you to everybody that supported Karen Reynolds and Marie Menzies on their recent trip to Uganda to build the classroom for the aids orphans of Bbira village in Kampala.  Karen and Marie would like to acknowledge and thank you for your donations to the building fund and also the Village Mum fund which raised $US700. They are holding two forums which will give them the opportunity to thank you all personally for your wonderful involvement in this project, and to share in the achievement.

Spectre Echo Landfall — SOFA  Gallery

10 October - 4 November — SOFA  Gallery

A new video installation by Nathan Pohio, with sound by Paul Homeboy, will be on show at the SOFA Gallery until 4 November. Pohio, who graduated from Canterbury University's School of Fine Arts in 1997, has produced a number of video artworks and installations including documentaries and experimental video films. He also produces a small number of paintings and prints.

The SOFA Gallery is open 11am-5pm Monday to Friday and 12-4pm on weekends.


Fulbright New Zealand funding opportunities

  • Fulbright Travel Awards
    Research and Consultancy Deadline 25 October
    These awards are for New Zealand academics, artists or professionals to visit the US for 10 to 90 days in order to present papers at conferences and/or deliver lectures in the US from a New Zealand perspective. Approximately eight awards valued at up to NZ$5000 are offered each year.

  • Fulbright Senior Specialist Awards
    Research and Consultancy deadline 25 October
    These awards are for New Zealand academic institutions to host US academics, artists or professionals for lectures, seminars, workshops, conferences or symposiums for two to six weeks. Approximately six awards valued at up to NZ$8400 (plus travel expenses) are offered each year.

Ilam Homestead Gardens Open Day — 28 October

Take a stroll through the magnificent rhododendron and azalea gardens at the Ilam Homestead Gardens before enjoying a Devonshire tea provided by White Tie Catering during an open day on 28 October, 10am-4pm.

Garden tours will be available on the hour for $2 per person and live music will be performed on the homestead verandah between 1pm and 3pm. Devonshire tea is $10.

He Pānga Rawe — Special Connections

1–31 October — The Lounge, Central Library

Staff and Students are invited to visit an exhibition which examines the presence of Māori in the School of Fine Arts, and pays tribute to the contribution of eminent Māori artist and educator Jonathan Manē-Wheoki.  The exhibition was curated and written by UC art historian Dr Jo Diamond with support from Terri Elder, the University Art Curator.

The works in this exhibition highlight the diversity within the art of Māori graduates, and demonstrate the importance of the special connections that are sometimes made between teachers and students.  It also acknowledges the important contribution Māori culture has made, and continues to make, at this University.

A floor talk will be given on 11am, Friday 26 October. The numbers will be limited for this presentation.  If you would like to attend this talk, please RSVP Sharon.King@canterbury.ac.nz by Wednesday 24 October.
