Marsden Fund Seminar

Recital — Brigitte Murray and Maurice Till

Soprano Brigitte Murray and pianist Maurice Till will perform works by Bononcini, Gluck, Mozart, Wolf, Grieg, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov, Bridge and Hageman.

A geograher's view from the top of the world

5 - 6pm, Friday 26 October — Law, room 108

Penny Goddard, a student in the Department of Geography reached the summit of Mt Everest on May 16 after a series of serendipitous events. She obtained a spare place on an Everest expedition but effectively climbed as am individual along with some Philippine friends in another team. Come and hear Penny talk about her amazing achievement.


Wattie's Cans Film Festival

7 November

Tickets for the annual Wattie's Cans Film Festival, where you take along a can of food to the movies, are available from your local participating cinema from 29 October. All cans of food will be donated to the Salvation Army Christmas food banks. Session times will be advertised by you local cinema.

Guest Speaker:Kristina Anglem — "Stepping Outside of your Comfort Zone"

In 2002 Kristina left the secure salary of a Christchurch College of Education lecturer to become a full time athlete. She competed in Adventure Races around the world, living off prize money. After reaching World Champ status in 2005 Kristina changed sports: endurance racing 500km to Olympic kayak sprinting 500m. This talk describes the effort it took to step out of her comfort zone and what now exists because of taking that step.

New Zealand Association for Environmental Education Conference

16-18 January 2008 — Dunedin

Those interested in advancing environmental education are invited to register for the biennial NZAEE Conference in Dunedin. Two international leaders in Education for Sustainability — Professor Bjarne Jensen from Denmark and Professor John Fien from Australia — will complement local keynote speakers and an array of workshops.

2007 Annual Biology Colloquium for PhD students

9am-5pm, Friday 26 October, in lecture theatres A4-A6

A BBQ will follow at 5pm. The theme for this symposium is '‘Biotechnology, Biodiversity and Biosecurity’ and is an opportunity for students to showcase their research that could have a real and significant impact on New Zealand's natural environment.

This is a whole day event with parallel sessions running in two lecture theatres. Talks from each of the three areas of interest will be mixed in each session so it really provides an opportunity to see the wide spectrum of research that is going on in the biology department.

 

Library hours

At this time of year the Library adjusts its hours of opening for a short period of time to provide students with more opportunities to use our facilities for exam preparation.

Staff and Students need to note the following changes:

Tuesday 23 October-Wednesday 14 November End-of-year Exams

  • Extended hours of opening for the Engineering, Law and Physical Sciences libraries.These libraries will be open from Monday-Thursday until 11pm and on Fridays will remain open until 9pm.


General Staff Development Awards

Applications for the December Awards close at 5pm, Thursday 15 November 2007

The Vice-Chancellor’s General Staff Development Awards of up to $5000 are available twice a year for continuing General Staff members (including continuing part-time staff.) The awards are to recognise and assist exceptional professional development initiatives by general staff. The sum may be allocated in total to one individual or team, or in parts to a number of applicants.

Spectre Echo Landfall — SOFA  Gallery

10 October - 4 November — SOFA  Gallery

A new video installation by Nathan Pohio, with sound by Paul Homeboy, will be on show at the SOFA Gallery until 4 November. Pohio, who graduated from Canterbury University's School of Fine Arts in 1997, has produced a number of video artworks and installations including documentaries and experimental video films. He also produces a small number of paintings and prints.

The SOFA Gallery is open 11am-5pm Monday to Friday and 12-4pm on weekends.


CAGCY (Canterbury Association for Gifted Children and Youth) 30th birthday celebration

Saturday 27 October

  • 10am — researcher Danny Knudson and author of "Gifted education in New Zealand primary schools 1878-2005" will speak on the "History of Gifted Education in NZ, and Case studies 40 years on".
  • 12.30pm — educator and researcher Louise Tapper will speak about "Perceptions of underachievement in gifted and talented students".
    Cost $10 per seminar. 

Sunday 28 October — 2pm and 6pm
CAGCY children give gala performances of wearable art, music, drama, dance and comedy. There will be performances of excerpts from classic favourites "Alice in Wonderland" and "Midsummer’s Night Dream" plus new musical, dance and theatrical works written by the children themselves.

Ilam Homestead Gardens open day

Sunday 28 October

Take a stroll through the magnificent rhododendron and azalea gardens at the Ilam Homestead Gardens before enjoying a Devonshire tea provided by White Tie Catering during an open day on 28 October, 10am-4pm.

Garden tours will be available on the hour for $2 per person and live music will be performed on the homestead verandah between 1pm and 3pm. Devonshire tea is $10.

 

He Pānga Rawe — Special Connections

1–31 October — The Lounge, Central Library

Staff and Students are invited to visit an exhibition which examines the presence of Māori in the School of Fine Arts, and pays tribute to the contribution of eminent Māori artist and educator Jonathan Manē-Wheoki.  The exhibition was curated and written by UC art historian Dr Jo Diamond with support from Terri Elder, the University Art Curator.

The works in this exhibition highlight the diversity within the art of Māori graduates, and demonstrate the importance of the special connections that are sometimes made between teachers and students.  It also acknowledges the important contribution Māori culture has made, and continues to make, at this University.

 

The Nutpoint Gallery — Celtic Spring 2007

7.30pm, Saturday 27 October — Corner of Old West Coast and Langdales Road

Emeralds & Greenstone: The enchantment of Celtic and Maori music combine in this exploration of our cultural roots. Formed by Ariana Tikao and Laura Tomlin in early 2006 it has the aim of weaving together Celtic and Maori music through various themes shared by both traditions.

Beginning with a cappella chants hundreds of years old, the concert then introduced sparkling jazz and fingerstyle guitars along with the bodhràn, flute and whistle, and seamlessly moved through songs of birth, life and death, incorporating lullabyes, love songs, journeying songs and laments with lyrics variously in English, Maori, or even Scots and Irish Gaelic.
