In early 2008 SHaC 09 - the Sustainable Habitat Challenge - will be launched to tertiary organisations around New Zealand. The Challenge is for polytechnics and universities in each region to build a high impact home that creates little impact on the planet. SHaC 09 will ask collaborative tertiary teams from around the country to research, design and build a home - using fewer resources and more sustainable practices - over a period of 18 months.
Find out how the University of Canterbury can get involved. An information session about SHaC 09 will be delivered at University of Canterbury for staff, students, local council members and other relevant people in your region. Come along to find out more.

With the help of the Library, UC Sustainability (Facilities Management) is seeking staff and student feedback on cycling and walking facilities at the University, including paths, roads, cycling support services, and cycle stands, to identify any shortfalls, obstructions, safety issues, etc. Your feedback will be used to help make cycling and walking to, from and around UC easier, safer and more pleasant. From broader planning ideas, to a specific cut-down that’s needed along your walking or cycling route, to new cycle stands, to whatever you think would improve cycling and/or walking facilities on/near campus.
There are brief online surveys (one for walking, one for cycling – you can do one or both) kindly hosted by the Library or there are paper versions available at displays in Central, Engineering, and Education Libraries, until 16 November.
The following policies/procedures (pdf documents) have been reviewed and updated in the UC Policy Library:
Records Management Policy
Research Conduct Policy
For other recent additions and reviews go the UC Policy Library and click on "updates" in left side bar.

This week we encounter a spectograph, which is basically a Thomas the Tank Engine looking sort of machine for measuring cool things like the speed and temperature of stars, and then we probe into those pesky near earth asteroids: this is something that deeply concerns presenter - Joanna Cobley’s 7 ½ year old. Apparently astronomers are also concerned and wouldn't like us to suffer the same fate as the dinosaurs and they've devised really cool ideas (nothing on the drawing board yet) about how to prevent asteroids from entering the earth's atmosphere.
