Feedback deadline 18 January 2008
The Ministry of Resesearch, Science and Technology (MoRST) has been working with the research, science and technology (RS&T) sector to identify the critical components that need to be present in the workforce if we are to continue to improve our RS&T performance.
They have designed an "advanced skills" framework to capture these findings. This includes key issues relating to:
The Advanced Skills Action Plan discussion document includes eleven options to provide additional or different support for the development of advanced skills.
MoRST are seeking feedback from sector stakeholders and government agencies on which of the options are likely to be the most effective and how they might best be implemented.
They will use this feedback to develop an Advanced Skills Action Plan for RS&T. This action plan will identify practical actions for government and the sector to support our ability to attract, develop and retain top-performing people.
The implementation of this action plan will support the objectives of the Skill New Zealand Strategy, a tripartite initiative with union and business involvement, coordinated by the Department of Labour.
To provide feedback read An Advanced Skills Action Plan discussion document then send MoRST your views online. Individual responses should be made on the individual response form. Responses should be made by 18 January 2008.

As a result of a recent review by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST), the University of Canterbury has received a further budget allocation to our overarching TechNet 07/08 Scheme contract. This essentially means we have more funds for distribution under this scheme. To maintain this level of funding for future years, we would like to see staff maximising the use of these funds as much as possible.
We would like to call for expressions of interest from anyone who is keen to utilise this source of funding. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact John Duncan, ext 7849 john.duncan@canterbury.ac.nz.
The Technet 2007/2008 scheme enables experts in Crown Research Institutes (CRIs), universities and research organisations to work with companies that are in need of advice to solve technical problems that are impeding innovation and future growth.
The scheme provides a maximum of $5000 (incl GST) for eligible projects. Funding does not require co-funding for eligible projects. Funding for TechNet is available for companies with a turnover under $50 million per annum and registered for GST, and can be used just once for each technical problem intended to be used strategically (ideally contact with the expert leads to an ongoing working relationship and future innovation within the company).
TechNet funding can be used to support any of the following activities:
