Antarctic Exploration Study Tour 2009

International Programmes, UCO, are proposing to offer a trip of a life time to the coldest, driest, windiest continent on the earth – Antarctica. We are seeking your opinions, feedback and expressions of interest for such a trip.

Tentatively, we would like to see this study tour comprise of a lecture series before a 2 week trip via South America to the ice.

The study component would be in the form of a specialised dvd, personalised for this particular study tour by experts over in Gateway Antarctica here at UC. The DVD would allow participants to study at their own pace, at home, whenever suits. It would be recommended that study commences 3 months prior to the sailing.

The tour to the ice itself would be on board, sailing from South America for 10 days. On board the learning will continue with experts in their field sharing stories and holding lectures and discussions. The sailing is proposed for late (Nov–Dec) 09.

To comment or give feedback, suggest or express your interest, contact Martina at martina.rangihuna@canterbury.ac.nz.

New legislation for KiwiSaver

New legislation for KiwiSaver has been passed. Here are the most important points that employees need to know:

  • Staff over the age of 18 may be entitled to an employer contribution in their KiwiSaver account – as long as contributions are being deducted from their pay. This will come into effect from 1 April 2008. Employers will start by contributing 1% of the employee’s gross salary, and increase that by 1% each year until a maximum of 4% is reach by 2011. There are some exceptions, for example if employees already receive an employer contribution to another superannuation scheme, such as the NZUSS, NPF, GSF and other registered schemes.
  • Initially, employers’ compulsory contributions to KiwiSaver must be on top of employees’ regular pay. This applies despite any agreements employers may have made before 13 December 2007.  But going forward, employers can offset their contribution against pay movements as long as this is negotiated in good faith.

For more information about KiwiSaver and the recent amendments to the legislation, please visit the www.ird.govt.nz or www.kiwisaver.govt.nz sites.  For more information about the University Superannuation Scheme please visit http://www.intranet.canterbury.ac.nz/hr/super/index.shtml.
