Survey closes 5 May 2008.
If you currently use or are interested in using a wiki at UC please
take a few minutes to fill in this survey survey.it.canterbury.ac.nz.
Wikipedia defines a wiki as "software that allows users to collaboratively
create, edit, link, and organize the content of a website, usually
for reference material. Wikis are often used to create collaborative
websites and to power community websites". The full wikipedia
reference can be seen at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki.
This survey aims to find out what uses are currently made of wikis at UC, if there is a demand for new wikis and to see if there is a need for a university wide infrastructure for wiki software. It is being run by the Wiki Working Group, a subcommittee of ITAC, the University's Information Technology Advisory Committee.
Thank you for your participation, Anne Scott (Library). Wiki Working Group Chair
Following extensive consultation and evaluation over the last six months, the Learning Management System (LMS) Review is now moving to begin a trial of Moodle, the system selected as a possible alternative to Blackboard for the University's single supported LMS.
The trial will take place with courses taught over the Second Semester.
We are now calling for nominations and expressions of interest for
20-30 courses to take part in the trial. We will compile a portfolio
of courses which represent a range of different types of courses
and subjects.
UCTL will provide assistance and advice in conversion and setup of courses in the time up to the start of Semester 2, and provide support during the semester.
To apply, please contact Emma de Lacey, emma.delacey@canterbury.ac.nz, ext 6165.
A smaller but parallel trial will take place with some College of Education lecturers developing courses on Blackboard. If you are interested, please contact Emma.
Background to the LMS Review is available at http://studentnet.canterbury.ac.nz/lmsreview. A progress report will be published in the next two weeks.

In 2007 staff from UCTL identified and interviewed ten colleagues from a range of departments across the University in order to explore those factors which led their peers to recognise their good practice in teaching; learning, and/or e-learning. The results of this work are now available in a booklet and multimedia CD ROM which offer insights and tips into colleagues’ teaching practice and preparation.
UCTL will be hosting a short event at which colleagues will hear from and meet some of the contributors to this work. Copies of the booklet and multimedia CD ROM will be also be made available free of charge at this event.
All UC staff are welcome to attend with some restrictions on places. Please RSVP to linda.bowman@canterbury.ac.nz.

International Programmes, UCO, are proposing to offer
a trip of a life time to the coldest, driest, windiest continent
on the earth – Antarctica. We are seeking your opinions, feedback
and expressions of interest for such a trip.
Tentatively, we would like to see this study tour comprise of a lecture
series before a 2 week trip via South America to the ice.
The study component would be in the form of a specialised dvd, personalised
for this particular study tour by experts over in Gateway
Antarctica here at UC. The DVD would allow participants to study
at their own pace, at home, whenever suits. It would be recommended
that study commences 3 months prior to the sailing.
The tour to the ice itself would be on board, sailing from South
America for 10 days. On board the learning will continue with experts
in their field sharing stories and holding lectures and discussions.
The sailing is proposed for late (Nov–Dec) 09.
