UC Research Profile now online

Research and Consultancy are pleased to announce that the UC Research Profile, a showcase of UC research excellence, is now available on the web.

The UC Research Profile provides detailed information on the research interests and affiliations of UC researchers, the research projects they are working on, the research groups they are part of and the major pieces of equipment they use. All this information is fully interlinked and provides users with a broad view of research at UC and access to greater detail about the particular research they are interested in.

This site can be accessed via links on the UC homepage or at http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/ucresearchprofile. Information contained within the UC Research Profile can be also be picked up by internet search engines e.g. Google. This will be a great tool for anyone wanting to find out about UC research, for a range of purposes, for example, finding an expert on a particular topic, looking for a potential collaborator on a research project or finding out about what equipment UC has available for research.

Researchers are now invited to view and update their own profiles (as necessary) via the UC People & Research database (the research database that is used to store output information and write PBRF portfolios). Tutorial sessions are available for staff. These sessions are open (come and go as you please or as your timetable allows) and are a great opportunity to work on your profile while database help/advice is present. Tutorial session times for next week are:

  • Monday 16 June, Otakaro 216, Dovedale, 9-11am
  • Monday 16 June, ICTS 312, 3-5pm
  • Thursday 19 June, ICTS 312, 9-11am
  • Friday 20 June, Otakaro 216, Dovedale 3-5pm

Please contact Maxine Bryant in Research and Consultancy with any questions (maxine.bryant@canterbury.ac.nz or ext 4028).

NZ Geographical Society — Canterbury branch seminar

"Air pollution management, policy implications, and problems in New South Wales, Australia" by Prof Howard Bridgman, School of Environmental and Life Sciences, University of Newcastle, NSW Australia (and Erskine Fellow, Department of Geography, UC).

Professor Bridgman began applying his scientific knowledge of air pollution to management planning and decision making in the early 1990s.  He assisted the Newcastle City Council to develop their environmental management plan, and provided the scientific expertise for the Newcastle Airshed Management Action Plan (NAMAP), produced in 1998 and updated in 2005.  Along with co-author Leanne Graham, he has presented and published a number of papers at air pollution conferences assessing the interactions of science, management and policy on a local and regional scale.

Research Award 2008

The closing date for applications is 1 July 2008.

The GNCRT Research Award is in honour of the outstanding contributions Emeritus Professor Graham Nuthall has made through his research and scholarship to our understanding of learning and teaching. His research has focused on the experiences of individual students and how these experiences shape student learning. He has provided the international community of researchers, scholars and practitioners with a deeper appreciation and understanding of the significant and often very subtle classroom interactions which influence learning.

The award is available to teachers, researchers and research students. It is intended to facilitate and support classroom-based research to further our understanding of learning and teaching in the early childhood, primary and secondary education sectors. The research supported by the Award will reflect the research approach to studying classroom contexts and interactions that Professor Nuthall has used in his Project on Learning.

The award is also available to postgraduate students with research experience who are interested in short-term projects to publish from Professor Nuthall’s extensive collection of video-taped, audio-taped and written sources of classroom data.

The award carries a value of up to $10,000.  If a practising teacher wins the award they are eligible to apply for leave with pay for up to one term from their employing school board as the award is recognised by the Ministry of Education as a "Prestigious Award".

The recipient of the award will conduct the research under the auspices of the Trust located in the College of Education, University of Canterbury.

Further details regarding the award are available from Research and Consultancy.
