Research and Consultancy are pleased to announce that the UC Research Profile, a showcase of UC research excellence, is now available on the web.
The UC Research Profile provides detailed information on the research interests and affiliations of UC researchers, the research projects they are working on, the research groups they are part of and the major pieces of equipment they use. All this information is fully interlinked and provides users with a broad view of research at UC and access to greater detail about the particular research they are interested in.
This site can be accessed via links on the UC homepage or the address www.canterbury.ac.nz/ucresearchprofile. Information contained within the UC Research Profile can be also be picked up by internet search engines e.g. Google. This will be a great tool for anyone wanting to find out about UC research, for a range of purposes, for example, finding an expert on a particular topic, looking for a potential collaborator on a research project or finding out about what equipment UC has available for research.
Researchers are now invited to view and update their own Profiles (as necessary) via the UC People & Research database (the research database that is used to store output information and write PBRF portfolios). Tutorial sessions are available for staff. These sessions are open (come and go as you please or as your timetable allows) and are a great opportunity to work on your Profile while database help/advice is present.
Tutorial session times for next week are:

7pm, Friday 27 June — Carter Family Auditorium, Christchurch Art Gallery

Art Gallery to honour one of the country’s great literary voices.

The tribute will feature performances by Apirana Taylor, Tusiata
Avia, Bernadette Hall, Brian Potiki, Jeffrey Paparoa Holman, Danielle

Tuwhare, who died in January, received national acclaim with the publication of No Ordinary Son in 1964 — the first collection of poetry in English by a Māori writer. Over the course of his career, Tuwhare amassed a body of work including poetry, plays and short fiction.
More than 10 specialist authors have contributed to this book, including University of Canterbury staff members Professor Ian Lochhead and Professor Howard McNaughton. The glorious cover photo was taken by Duncan Shaw Brown.
The book traces the story of the theatre from its beginnings in the late Victorian period, through the dazzle of the J.C. Williamson years when the Australian entrepreneurs brought a succession of the world’ s most famous performers to New Zealand, to the present day, when local talent can compete with anything that comes from overseas. This is also the story of heroic community action: the saving of an almost derelict theatre in the 1980s and its transformation into a performing arts venue for the 21st century.
Like a stage show itself, the book is highly visual: it contains more than 300 illustrations. Proceeds from sales will contribute to Theatre Royal enhancement projects. Copies are available at the University Bookshop, the Theatre Royal and all good bookshops for $50.
11am and 2pm, Sunday 22 June — Christchurch Art Gallery
Ngai Tahu singer-songwriter, Ariana Tikao will be giving a rare
performance with her band as a part
of the gallery's Matariki celebrations to mark Maori New Year. This
Sunday Ariana will also be launching her new visuals funded by the
Ngai Tahu Fund, produced by Auckland based videographer, Louise Potiki
Bryant.
Earlier this year Ariana released her Tuia album funded by Creative
NZ, which has been receiving rave reviews in both NZ and UK. In March/April
she went to London for a CNZ sponsored residency. Ariana's performances
are described and "haunting" and "mesmerising".

The GNCRT Research Award is in honour of the outstanding contributions Emeritus Professor Graham Nuthall has made through his research and scholarship to our understanding of learning and teaching. His research has focused on the experiences of individual students and how these experiences shape student learning. He has provided the international community of researchers, scholars and practitioners with a deeper appreciation and understanding of the significant and often very subtle classroom interactions which influence learning.
The award is available to teachers, researchers and research students. It is intended to facilitate and support classroom-based research to further our understanding of learning and teaching in the early childhood, primary and secondary education sectors. The research supported by the Award will reflect the research approach to studying classroom contexts and interactions that Professor Nuthall has used in his Project on Learning.
The award is also available to postgraduate students with research experience who are interested in short-term projects to publish from Professor Nuthall’s extensive collection of video-taped, audio-taped and written sources of classroom data.
The award carries a value of up to $10,000. If a practising teacher wins the award they are eligible to apply for leave with pay for up to one term from their employing school board as the award is recognised by the Ministry of Education as a "Prestigious Award".
The recipient of the award will conduct the research under the auspices of the Trust located in the College of Education, University of Canterbury.
Further details regarding the award are available from Research and Consultancy.
