Child participants sought for Communication Disorders study

Tone Deaf? Trained Musician? Karaoke star?

We’re looking for children for a study investigating the performance of children on tasks of speech recognition in noise and pitch perception.

Participants should:

  • be between 6 and 16 years of age
  • have normal hearing
  • be native English speakers
  • have no language-related learning disabilities

Participation would involve attending 2 x one hour testing sessions, spaced three months apart. All testing will take place at the Department of Communication Disorders, University of Canterbury.

The speech perception test involves listening to and repeating short sentences in quiet, and in the presence of four-talker babble. The pitch perception task involves listening to a pair of tones that either ascend or descend in pitch and telling the researcher whether the tones went ‘up’ or ‘down’ either verbally, or by pointing to a pictorial response card.

If your child/ren or those of your friends meet these criteria please contact Chris Radford on 03-364-2987 ext 427 or cjr120@student.canterbury.ac.nz

Mission collection - thank you

The 11th Winter Appeal for the City Mission was a great success and thanks are due to the Director of Student Administration, Linda Roberts, for making the space on Concourse available.  Once again, the Mission collected an impressive amount of goods from the box on the Registry Concourse.  Warmest thanks to everybody who so generously contributed goods and, as well, to those staff on the Concourse and in the Warehouse for keeping an eye on the box and transporting it to and from the Warehouse.

Reminder Notices

UC Events Calendar

Earlier this year a new events site was launched on the University website (www.canterbury.ac.nz/events). The site can also be accessed by clicking on "more events" at the bottom of the University homepage.

The database-driven site allows staff to search on a wide range of events from academic conferences and seminars through to concerts and exhibitions. A feature of the new site is an "add to calendar" button that allows users to save an event into their Microsoft Outlook calendar.

An advantage of the system is that users can see in advance what is happening at the University on any given day. Staff are encouraged to check the database when organising events so as to avoid clashes.

Staff from throughout the University are now entering events directly into the system. Instructions on how to enter events can be found at https://intranet.canterbury.ac.nz/newsroom/forms/EventEdit.aspx?Item_id=0&type=event

If you need assistance in uploading events please contact michele.downer@canterbury.ac.nz.
