The University of Canterbury’s innovative SOFA Gallery, in the
Christchurch Arts Centre, is introducing a public lecture series to
“enlighten, provoke, stimulate and entertain”.
The series gets under way this Thursday with Richard Wentworth, one
of Britain’s leading contemporary sculptors, who has worked
with Henry Moore, speaking on contemporary sculpture.
Kate Darrow, the gallery manager, says the lecture series is one
way of reinforcing SOFA’s mission, which is to present a programme
for the promotion, enhancement, education and enjoyment of the visual
arts by the university and wider community.
“The public lectures are a means of showcasing academic staff,
art professionals and visiting international artists, who will present
dynamic and interesting lectures. The lectures are designed to engage
an audience and generate debate and greater understanding, ”
Ms Darrow says.
“They will be suited to those who want more than simplistic
explanations, but who also don’t want to be overwhelmed with
‘art-speak’.”
The cost is $10 per lecture with concessions for Friends of the Gallery
and they will be held in the Hurst Seager Room in the Arts Centre
starting with Wentworth’s this Thursday.
Further lectures include Canterbury University art history lecturer
Professor Pamela Gerrish Nunn and sculptor and lecturer Andrew Drummond
on The Body in Art, and Canterbury University lecturer Associate Professor
Denis Dutton on Darwinian Aesthetics: the evolutionary basis for the
arts.
The gallery has also introduced “floor talks” These will
be associated with the current exhibition, and start with one on Whare
on Sunday 8th September at 3pm in the Gallery (current exhibition
, at the gallery until 15 October). The next will be in association
with an exhibition by Slovenian artist Matej Andraz Vogrincic, at
3pm on 27 October. The floor talks are free.
