The Prime Minister Helen Clark will present the second annual Europa Lecture in Christchurch next week, an event introduced last year by the University of Canterbury’s National Centre for Research on Europe (NCRE).
The lecture will be held at the University of Canterbury at Bellamys, in the old Canterbury Provincial Chambers, on 20 November, and will be followed by a reception.
All European Ambassadors to New Zealand as well as Honorary Consuls, the mayor of Christchurch, local community leaders, members of the University of Canterbury Council, and members of the NCRE have been invited.
The 40 minute lecture will be followed by 20 minutes of questions and will address New Zealand’s relationship with the European Union.
The Europa lecture has been established by the NCRE as a prestige lecture to be given annually by prominent European or New Zealand political practitioners. The first lecture, last year , was given by Terry Wynn, Chair of the European Parliament Budget Committee. in 2001.
The Centre, New Zealand’s only centre for research on Europe, was opened in 2000 by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Phil Goff, with the objective of raising the research profile of Europe among students and staff at Canterbury, and nationally. It achieved national status this year following the receipt of a grant of $500,000 from the EU.
Current research includes examining EU-Pacific relations, investigating NZ media and public perceptions of the EU, and looking at the impact of EU enlargement on NZ trade and politics.
Next year, the Centre intends offering 20 scholarships to University of Canterbury graduates at other New Zealand universities to return to Canterbury for postgraduate study, and establishing two internships for New Zealand graduates to spend three months in the European Parliament.
