New scholarships for school leavers

The University of Canterbury has introduced 20 new under-graduate scholarships for school leavers with good marks in University Bursary examinations.

The scholarships pay for one year of full tuition fees. Selection is based on a student’s five best Bursary results.

Fourteen of the scholarships are untagged. A further scholarship is available specifically for Maori students and another one for Pacific Island students. These latter two are based both on a student’s academic merit and participation in their culture. And another four scholarships are available to a student from each of one of the following: Linwood College, Aranui High School, Catholic Cathedral College, and Hornby High School.

Scholarships officer Tony Hodge said the aim was to offer support for top achieving students from around the country, as well as encourage students from local schools who could be facing financial hardship or other challenges that were preventing them from viewing university study as an option.

Students who are expecting good results in their Bursary examinations should contact the UC Scholarships Office by emailing schols@canterbury.ac.nz or phoning Toni Hodge on (03) 364 2966 for an application. Applications close on 15 January 2003, and applicants must have pre-enrolled by that date.
