The weird and wacky line up for the Undie 500

A selection of weird and wacky vehicles will take off for Dunedin on Friday 22 August in the annual University of Canterbury Engineering Society (ENSOC) Undie 500.

The name comes from one of the rules of the event: no car can cost more than $500. Other rules state that the car must be warranted and registered and that each must have one sober driver. The engineers slave over their cars for weeks, dressing them up in themes from Noah’s Ark to Formula 1.

More than 100 cars are expected to gather at the University car park on Clyde Road at 11am for judging of the “Best Dressed Car”. The judging panel includes a range of personalities including Andrew Mehrtens.

More than engineering pride is at stake, with some great prizes being provided by Nestlé New Zealand Ltd and Pixie Caramel.

When the honour has been bestowed the epic journey to Dunedin begins. With pre-determined stops at preferred watering holes along the way the convoy is expected to arrive in Dunedin at around 10.30pm

Once in Dunedin the frivolity continues. At 1pm on Saturday 23 August the Undie revellers will assemble at the bottom of Baldwin Street for the “Longest Lasting Car” challenge. The challenge is to see if any of the cars can make it to the top of the steepest street in the world, and if so who has the most prowess and style doing it.
