Restructuring discussion document released

The University of Canterbury has released a discussion document outlining proposed structural change.

Following a process of consultation, the University Council in May this year agreed to a new university structure of four colleges and a School of Law. The implementation discussion document looks at the complete implementation process such as what tasks will be carried out by college office staff, how service departments will provide support services and resources, and how jobs will change.

Vice Chancellor Professor Roy Sharp said there were very clear, key reasons for making changes.

“We need to have a strong senior leadership structure to take the University into the
future, and an efficient and effective administrative structure which enables us to put our resources and efforts into the core business of teaching and research.

“We also have to move decision-making closer to where decisions will actually be implemented and to establish a management structure where all staff have clearresponsibilities and accountabilities.”

The document now goes through a staff consultation process, with feedback due by mid-September. Following that, the Vice-Chancellor will release a formal change proposal in late September and call for further submissions, before making decisions in mid-October.

Restructuring project leader Dr John Vargo said some jobs could change as a result of the proposed restructuring, and that new jobs could be created. All new and changed jobs would be initially advertised internally to staff. Dr Vargo said the University could not rule out the possibility of redundancies.

“There has been and is continuing to be full consultation with union representatives throughout the restructuring planning and implementation process, and University is offering a range of confidential support services to staff.”

Proposed implementation would be January 2004.
