A range of benefits, including student scholarships and significant savings in computer equipment, will flow as a result of a Joint Purchasing initiative entered into by Canterbury’s four major tertiary institutions.
The Canterbury Tertiary Alliance (CTA) – comprising the Christchurch College of Education, Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, Lincoln University and the University of Canterbury – has opted for a co-ordinated approach for the purchase of desktop and notebook computers.
The CTA has appointed three preferential suppliers: Cyclone Computers and Hewlett Packard for desktop computers together with Toshiba (via a partner) and Hewlett Packard for notebook computers. The agreement will be for a term of two years, with the option to review for a further two years.
CTA IT spokesman Associate Professor Michael Dewe, IT Director at the University of Canterbury, said the joint IT purchasing represented a very significant decision for the CTA and was a major step forward.
“It is clearly a win-win relationship for both the successful vendors and the CTA partners. Maintaining a good standard of IT equipment is essential to remain competitive in the tertiary sector,” said Professor Dewe.
“The joint IT purchasing requirements for the CTA members involve several thousand computers and notebooks over a two year period. Vendors have offered a significant reduction in the cost of standard computers and notebooks. A number of other benefits such as student scholarships and recruitment opportunities for CTA graduates were also offered.”
Professor Dewe said the announcement had been enthusiastically received by the successful vendors, who all play key roles in the tertiary education market in New Zealand.
“Cyclone, Hewlett Packard, Toshiba and their partners are keen to build on the relationship and collaborate with the tertiary sector. They were all looking forward to a long and mutually beneficial partnership with the CTA.”
Formed in September 2001 the CTA aims to ensure that Christchurch's four major providers develop tertiary education choices in Canterbury in a complementary way. This ensures cooperation in best practice, cost efficiencies, collegiality and ultimately benefits students.
