Ernie’s little frock

A tartan frock worn by University of Canterbury alumnus and Nobel Prize winning scientist Ernest Rutherford as a young boy is on display in the foyer of the Canterbury Museum until 30 November.

The red tartan frock trimmed with black silk was sent to the Canterbury Pilgrims’ and Early Settlers’ Association in August 1950 by Lady Rutherford. Written on the outside of the parcel was the inscription “Ernie’s little frock”.

The museum had planned to put the 130-year-old frock on display in early September but delays in the conservation work prevented this.

The well-worn frock has undergone extensive and exacting remedial treatment by Auckland textile conservator Tracey Wedge, who previously worked on Baron Rutherford’s christening gown. Difficulties occurred when trying to match up the distinctive red tartan pattern of the frock and fabric had to be sourced and delivered from Scotland.
