University sets fees for 2004

The University of Canterbury Council yesterday approved
a 1.4% increase in tuition fees for 2004 for all bands except speech
and language therapy.
The figure of 1.4% represents the latest projection of the consumer
price index (cpi) for 2004. It is the lowest fee increase percentage
of the seven New Zealand universities to have set their fees.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Sharp said the increase had been set at
the level of the cpi to allow the University to maintain the quality
of its courses in the face of increased costs, "while taking into
consideration the desire to keep fees as low as possible for the sake
of students".
Tuition fees for speech and language therapy will increase by 5% to
correct a historical anomaly. The University had set its fees for speech
and language therapy at the Category B (Science) level, whereas the
Ministry of Education places it in Category C (Engineering, Audiology
etc). The 2004 adjustment is the first step of a 7.6% increase required
to bring the tuition fees to Category C level.
