A new preparatory course offers New Zealand students another route into university study.
The Certificate in University Preparation (CUP), recently approved for delivery at the University of Canterbury, is a five-month course leading to a university entrance qualification.
It has been developed especially for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents who do not meet university entrance requirements, principally school leavers who have not reached the required standard and students who have been out of school for many years and wish to refresh their study skills before beginning a degree programme.
The full-time course runs from February to June, allowing those who complete it successfully to enrol for first-year courses in the second semester, which starts in July. While full-time study is encouraged, a part-time option is available.
The CUP aims to help students develop the skills needed for successful university study, including: study and time management skills; oral and written communications skills; analytical, critical and problem-solving skills; information literacy skills; interpersonal, group and teamwork skills; and an appreciation of New Zealand’s diverse cultural environment.
