Lord Winston is well known to television audiences around the world for his work on The Human Body television series, in which he explained the inner workings of the human body, as well as the Secret Life of Twins, Superhuman and Human Instinct programmes.
His research into embryology and genetics has brought him international recognition in the medical fraternity.
Lord Winston is also an active parliamentarian and chairs the House of Lords science and technology select committee.
The afternoon function on Monday (5 July) will feature displays of current research work being done at the College of Science - one of four colleges in a new structure adopted by the University this year.
It will be held at the Canterbury Innovation Incubator, in central Christchurch, to symbolise the importance of scientific endeavours for the wider community.
“Science at Canterbury University has a long history of excellence and the time is right to take our science to the City,” says the College of Science’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Shaw.
“The future of science is through applications that benefit New Zealand. By taking the College of Science official opening to the Innovation Incubator we hope that it will send a message to our potential industrial and CRI collaborators.
“Lord Winston's willingness to join us adds significant value to our celebration”.
