Maori Language Week at UCPublished by the Communications and Development Department
28 July 2004
Encouraging students to use Te Reo in their CV is one of many Maori Language Week initiatives at the University of Canterbury.
UC’s Maori equity and access advisor, Keela Atkinson, says she wants to use the week to demonstrate practical uses of the language which can be incorporated into daily living.
A Maori language resource kit, which includes a CD Rom, book and labels displaying Maori words, is being distributed to every department at the University to encourage daily use of Te Reo.
She has organised for guest speakers from Ngai Tahu to talk to students about the benefits they have gained from using the Maori language in their professional and private lives.
Other events include a Maori quiz night, a debate and weaving displays.
The week’s activities will culminate with a hangi on Friday.
