Some of the South Island’s best known writers, including Owen Marshall and Fiona Farrell, will discuss the state of spirituality in Pakeha culture in a series of lunchtime discussions organised by UC and the University Bookshop.
In the first discussion at 1pm Wednesday, 8 September, in the Great Hall at the Arts Centre, Farrell will be joined by Dr Mike Grimshaw (UC Religious Studies) and Professor Paul Morris (VUW Religious Studies) to consider whether it is only Maori who have a spiritual relationship with the South Island landscape. The discussion will be chaired by Associate Professor Mark Williams (UC English).
On Friday 17 September at 1pm, Owen Marshall, Christine Johnston and Patrick Evans (UC English) will ask whether there is such a thing as a South Island literature in a discussion at the University Bookshop, on the Canterbury University campus. Morrin Rout will be chairman.
The UC Bookshop will also be the venue for the third discussion in the series on Friday 24 September at 1pm, in which Dr Sharon McIver (UC Cultural Studies) will talk about rave and dance events in the South Island high country and Dr John Newton (UC English) will look at the way the South Island’s mountains have been used by mountaineers over the years. Claire Hero (UC English) will chair this discussion.
The discussions at the University Bookshop will be free of charge. A gold coin donation will be required for entry to the first event at the Great Hall on Wednesday 8 September.
