An exhibition of works by the late James Ormond Wallace opens tomorrow
(20 October) at the University of Canterbury’s SOFA Gallery, in
the Christchurch Arts Centre.
Wallace, who died just over a year ago of a heart disease at the age
of 28, graduated from Canterbury University’s School of Fine Arts
in 1997.
The exhibition, which will run until 28 November, focuses on Wallace’s
video and sculptural works, including a two-and-a-half hour video filmed
in the UK, France and New Zealand titled Behind me is Fire, Before me
is Black.
After graduating from Canterbury University Wallace travelled to London
where he found work in film and television.
On returning to New Zealand, he worked for three years as an art department
runner during filming of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.
