11 November 2004

The Nobel Prize winner, Professor Clive Granger, will present his first public lecture as Canterbury Distinguished Professor on Wednesday (17 November).

Professor Granger, who retired last year from the University of California at San Diego, was joint recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences.

Professor Granger is one of the world’s leading econometricians and was made the first Canterbury Distinguished Professor earlier this year.

Only exceptional visitors to the University of Canterbury, such as Nobel laureates, are considered for the Distinguished Professor position. No more than two or three visitors are likely to be given the title over the next five to 10 years.

His lecture on Wednesday, The Economics of Peace, will consider how the economy of a country at peace might be used to keep the peace.

Professor Granger, who is being hosted by the University’s College of Business and Economics, will compare economic data collected from European countries during peace and war times in the 20th century.

The lecture on Wednesday, in the C3 lecture theatre, will begin at 5pm.
