Big orange option for UC commuters

It’s new, it’s big, it’s orange and it will roll on by in another 15 minutes.

It’s one of a fleet of 12 bright orange Metrostar buses which hit the streets of Christchurch from today and will be seen driving through University Drive on its route.

The Metrostar is a new cross-suburban bus service between New Brighton and Halswell that connects leading attractions such as QEII Park, The Palms, Merivale Mall, Westfield Riccarton Mall, the University of Canterbury, Wigram Airforce World and Hornby Mall.

It will operate at 15-minute intervals Monday to Saturday 7am to 6pm and every half hour in the evenings and for the most part of Sunday.

The Metrostar route was designed by passenger transport staff at Environment Canterbury to address requests from the community. The service is expected to fill a gap not catered for by the Orbiter and city-to-suburb routes.

The buses were built by Designline, Ashburton coach builders, and the contract for providing the service was won by Christchurch’s Red Bus Limited.

Facilities Management Director Peter Molony, who was at the Metrostar launch held last Thursday at the University of Canterbury’s Ilam Homestead, welcomed the new bus service.

“We are pleased to support University Drive as a route for another cross-town bus service. There is also going to be a brilliant new bus shelter put in by the bus company.”

Mr Molony believed the big orange buses would appeal to many UC staff and student who lived near its route.

"Supporting alternative means of transport to and from the campus via University Drive means less pressure on converting more of our precious green space into asphalt parks."
