The University of Canterbury welcomes today's Tertiary Education Commission
announcement of a partial round in 2006 for the second Performance-Based
Research Fund Quality Evaluation.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Roy Sharp, said the early date gave new
staff and those who were near the boundary of a higher quality category
an opportunity to press their case and to further enhance UC's reputation
as a top-class research university.
"The first PBRF result clearly placed the University of Canterbury
as one of New Zealand's top two universities for research. I hope that
the second round will be an early opportunity to confirm that high rating
and further enhance our research status," he said.
PBRF is part of a shift from issuing tertiary research funding based
on the number of enrolments to one which rewards institutions for the
quality of their research. Between 2004 and 2007 the PBRF will progressively
replace the current EFTS (equivalent full-time student) “top-up”
funding for research.
