Associate Professor Gail Gillon has been appointed to the position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor and professor of the UC College of Education. She replaces Dr Graham Stoop who left the University earlier this year after being appointed Chief Executive of the Education Review Office.
Professor Gillon (Ngāi Tahu) is currently a leading researcher in UC's Department of Communication Disorders. She is also Kaiarahi Maori for the College of Science.
Her appointment, which will take effect on 5 September, will see her returning to her academic roots. It was at the former Christchurch College of Education (now the UC College of Education) where she completed her professional qualifications in education, teaching, and speech-language therapy.
After graduating in 1983 she spent several years working in New Zealand and Australia in the special education sector, before completing her Doctorate in Speech and Hearing at the University of Queensland in 1995.
Professor Gillon's research, which focuses on the prevention of reading disorder for children at risk, has received much international attention. Her research has been widely published in leading speech-language pathology, reading, and education journals. On three occasions Professor Gillon has won the esteemed American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Editor's Award for articles published of highest merit. She has recently been appointed a Fellow of the association.
Professor Gillon said she is very excited by the opportunity to lead the College of Education team in its contribution to excellence in research and teaching at both national and international levels.
UC Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Sharp is looking forward to Professor Gillon joining the University's Senior Management Team.
“Her appointment follows a rigorous international recruitment process and I know she will be an excellent leader for the College of Education.”
