New Zealand’s future leaders were honoured at a UC Scholarship Awards function in the Christchurch Convention Centre last night.

A total of 161 scholarships valued at more than $635,000 were presented to students who are all embarking on their first year of tertiary study. More than 40 percent of those receiving scholarships were from outside the Christchurch area.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Sharp told the students the country would be looking to them to provide future leadership.

“Who are leaders?  They are people who think for themselves; those who ask the questions. They are the ones others are prepared to follow.

“We are looking at you to be the leaders of the future.  We will look to your leadership for inspiration,” Professor Sharp said.

Commander Tony Millar of the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) presented Rachel Standring of Christchurch with the HMNZS Canterbury Scholarship.

The prestigious scholarship was established by the RNZN in 2005 on the occasion of the decommissioning of the Leander frigate HMNZS Canterbury. It recognises the long and supportive relationship between the RNZN and the province of Canterbury.

Commander Millar said funding for the $10,000 scholarship came not from public funds but from the sailors who served on the new HMNZS Canterbury.

Murray Compton, Chairman of the Riccarton Youth Trust, presented Stephen Blair of Christchurch with the $10,000 Rotary Youth Trust Scholarship.

James Eagle of Rotorua was awarded the Aurora Scholarship in Astronomy.  The scholarship is valued at $10,000 — $4000 for tuition fees, $5000 for international travel to support research, and $1000 for domestic travel.

Twenty-nine UC Dux Scholarships were awarded to top secondary schools students from throughout the South Island.

Twenty-one UC Emerging Leadership Scholarships were presented for all-round excellence with a further 14 awarded by individual colleges and departments.  The UC Emerging Leaders’ Scholarship Maori Award was presented to Jack Baker of Fielding while Renee Ma’u of Christchurch received the UC Emerging Scholarship Pasifika Award.
