Three foreign language films never before screened in New Zealand will make their national debut during the University of Canterbury's arts festival Platform.
The first, entitled Dolls, is a Japanese film supplied for the festival by the Japan Foundation. Directed by Takeshi Kitano, it was inspired by traditional Japanese bunraku puppet theatre. It weaves together three stories of undying love.
Zim and Co is a French film directed by Pierre Jolivet. Supplied for the festival by the French Embassy, it follows the adventures of the young hero, Zim, who lives in the poor multi-racial outskirts of Paris.
The third film is a compilation of four short films by university students in Shanghai. One of the directors of two of the films, Musique Huang, will be at the screening to talk to members of the audience afterwards.
Event organiser Dr Adam Lam, from the University's School of Languages and Cultures, says audiences can expect to be highly entertained by all three films, which are reflections of the contemporary cultures within which they were produced.
The films will screen on 25 May at the Southern Ballet Theatre at the Arts Centre. Dolls will screen at 1pm; Zim and Co at 3.30pm; and Short Films by University Students in Shanghai at 6pm. Entry is free to Dolls. Entry to Zim and Co and Short Films by University Students in Shanghai is $10/$7 at the door.
