Canterbury graduates were dominant in the student category of New Zealand's major journalism awards – the Qantas Awards – being named top journalism student in print and runner-up in broadcasting.
John Hartevelt, now at The Press, Christchurch, and Tim Graham, an intern at Radio New Zealand, were Graduate Diploma in Journalism students last year.
Mr Hartevelt was one of the two inaugural Fairfax Media interns assigned to Canterbury for their journalism training in 2007.
Associate Professor Jim Tully said their success reflected the intense practical training Canterbury journalism students received in both print and broadcasting media.
"Our multi-skilled approach is producing graduates who can pursue careers in newspapers, magazines, radio, television and websites which is essential in an age of media convergence."
Other Canterbury journalism graduates to star in the Qantas Awards included Jodi Yeats (1996) magazine feature writer of the year with Rebecca Macfie (1987), a finalist.
