A calendar celebrating the achievements of UC’s most distinguished alumnus, Ernest, Lord Rutherford, has been released to mark 100 years since he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
It spans the period July 2008 to June 2009, placing the actual centennial — 10 December 2008 — at the middle of the period.
The calendar was produced by Rutherford’s Den, the museum based at The Arts Centre where Rutherford spent his student days.
The calendar features images related to Rutherford, Rutherford’s Den or The Arts Centre, as well as some important events that occurred in Rutherford’s life in each of the months. The cover depicts the understanding of radioactive decay at the time that Rutherford received the Nobel Prize.
Rutherford’s Den trustee Associate Professor Peter Cottrell (Physics and Astronomy) said the den’s board was excited by the opportunities the calendar provided for promoting the den and the University.
“It’s a fantastic way to highlight the activities of the den, not only as a living museum to UC’s most famous alumni, but also through the den’s outreach activities, some of which are linked to the College of Science’s outreach programme.
“The den’s funding for outreach comes through a Learning Experiences Outside The Classroom contract with the Ministry of Education. The teachers that we have employed at the den bring the place alive for school groups through science, technology, creative writing and drama activities linked to the New Zealand Curriculum. We’ve got a dream team.”
The calendar was launched at a special function earlier this month attended by the den’s new patron, former cabinet minister and Canterbury alumna Hon. Margaret Austin.
