UC web template refresh

Published by Communications and Development

21 April 2009

The University of Canterbury website is undergoing its first makeover since it was rebranded in 2006.

The most obvious feature of the UC web template refresh project is the increase to the page width.

The new look will make important links on the UC home page easier to find and in general allows a cleaner, less cluttered design. It also means that there is more room for images, tables and diagrams on web pages.

The increase in the page width from 800 pixels to 1024 pixels combined with the reduction in most cases from three columns to two columns will give UC departments more screen real estate meaning increased flexibility on how they display their information on the web.

The Web Team is calling the refresh an “evolution rather than a revolution”, with no changing to the branding on the web.

The UC web template refresh is being progressively rolled out from 21 April by the Web Team. The first sites to be launched in the new look include the UC home page, other portal pages and the College of Arts sites.

As the Web Team works through the sites they are also progressively implementing new Google search functionality. This will enable users of the UC website to search the web using Google’s powerful and easy-to-use search. In particular this will enable a much greater ability to search documents, such as pdfs and word documents, that are hosted on the web.

The new search also indexes the Course Information System (CIS), making this fully searchable from the standard search box.

The new template enables the search feature to be more prominently displayed, with a search box being incorporated into the banner space at the top of each page.

UC web users are encouraged to email feedback and questions to websupport@canterbury.ac.nz.
