An eminent Australian philosopher will consider the history of philosophy and the important part it plays in the discipline during a public lecture at the University of Canterbury next week.
Professor Graham Priest, from the University of Melbourne, will discuss the topic “What is the History of Philosophy” at 7.30pm on 27 July. During his lecture he will look at what constitutes progress in philosophy, consider why the history of philosophy is such an integral part of philosophy and discuss the more general question of the value of philosophy.
Professor Priest has been the Boyce Gibson Professor of Philosophy at the University of Melbourne since 2001. He is also Arche Professor at St Andrews University in Scotland and is a distinguished professor of philosophy at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. Professor Priest has also served as president of the Australasian Association for Philosophy.
He is known for his work on logic, metaphysics and the history of philosophy, and is the author of a number of books including In Contradiction, Beyond the Limits of Thought and Towards Non-Being.
Professor Priest will be hosted during his visit by the University’s philosophy programme in the School of Humanities.
He will deliver his lecture at 7.30pm, Tuesday 27 July, in Coppertop (Commerce building) at the University of Canterbury (maps of campus can be found at http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/theuni/maps/).
